Meet… Charlie Levine

How do you celebrate and advocate for women and / or the exploration of space / place?
I am the founder of Welcome to Ladyland and co-director of SqW:Lab that explores the domestic, drawing and the creative process. I curate projects in the public realm and am interesting in queering and feminising those spaces.
Imagine if….
Senior decision makers and policy makers were primarily women.
You arrive at the gates of Ladyland, and you see…
Open spaces, great innovative design made to reflect diverse (female) needs, a community that promotes kindness, creativity and inclusivity and that work-days, and people’s expectations, are sympathetic to how women (would like) live their lives.
What main problem should Ladyland solve?
It should remove any sense of not belonging or fear by anyone, including but not limited to women, people of colour, older people, younger people and the LGBTQ+ communities.
Thank you, Charlie!
Charlie Levine specialises in creating communities of artists and partners to co-create complex art programmes for realisation across multiple venues. Specifically the designing and direction of the programme, the curatorial themes, working site / location responsively, bringing in the partners and developing (engagement) opportunities and legacy. Levine develops organisations to discover new creative networks and produce innovative creative projects with high profile and long term positive effects within their (and the creative) industry. She uses fiction as a starting point for exhibition making, alongside its context for viewing, and am inspired by collaboration. Her research lies in looking at the domestic space through a curatorial lens, and how curating and photography are linked via ‘the frame’. Levine is a passionate advocate of the arts, especially in policy and place making, creating more accessible entry routes into the arts and promoting a more diverse and representative sector. An independent Curator and Artistic Director, Levine works between the West Midlands, London and Mumbai. She obtained an MA in Critical and Contextual Art Practices from Birmingham City University (2006).
