A Real Reverse Mortgage Story: How Mike Found Peace of Mind at Home
One of the most rewarding parts of my job is seeing how the right mortgage strategy can truly change someone’s life. I recently had the privilege of working with a wonderful client named Mike, and his story is a perfect example of how a reverse mortgage can provide relief, security, and a fresh start.
Mike had owned his home for many years. Like many homeowners, he had built up a lot of equity over time — but he still owed about $100,000 on his mortgage. His monthly payment was $1,200, and his only steady income was $1,900 a month from Social Security.
As you can imagine, that didn’t leave much room for everyday living expenses. Groceries, utilities, insurance, gas, and medical costs quickly added up. To make ends meet, Mike had slowly been dipping into his savings. And while that worked for a while, he knew it wasn’t a long-term solution. He was stressed, frustrated, and worried about how long his money would last.
That’s when he was referred to me.
After reviewing his situation and exploring his options, we discovered that a reverse mortgage could be the right solution. With the equity in his home, Mike was able to:
- Pay off his existing mortgage
- Eliminate his $1,200 monthly payment
- Receive $50,000 in additional funds
That $50,000 wasn’t just extra money — it made a real difference. Mike had a back deck that was in serious need of repair. It had become unsafe, and he worried about falling through it. Now, thanks to the reverse mortgage, he was able to fix the deck and safely enjoy his outdoor space again.
Today, Mike has no monthly mortgage payment (other than property taxes and insurance), his savings are no longer draining away, and he finally has breathing room in his budget. Most importantly, he feels secure in his home and confident about his future.
And that, to me, is what a reverse mortgage is really about.
It’s not about giving up your home — it’s about using the value you’ve built to improve your quality of life. It’s about staying in the home you love, feeling safe, and having the financial freedom to enjoy your retirement.
For Mike, this truly was a win/win — and his life is better because of it.
If you or someone you love is curious about whether a reverse mortgage could help, I’d be honored to have that conversation.
