Types of Therapy: Make an Informed Choice

The “type of therapy” typically refers to the therapeutic approach used by a therapist. There are over 50 schools of psychology approaches in use currently, and it is important to understand which therapy might be best suited to your needs, here goes:

  1. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) (Aaron Beck)

CBT represents a realistic and action-oriented approach to mental health. It is rooted in the premise that our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors are inextricably linked.

CBT therapists work collaboratively with clients to identify and challenge maladaptive thought patterns and behaviors.

CBT is considered the gold standard for the treatment of mood disorders such as anxiety and depression.

  1. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) (Marsha Linehan)

DBT is a specialized form of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy that focuses on helping individuals with:

A. Emotion regulation

B. Distress tolerance

C. Interpersonal effectiveness

D. Mindfulness.

DBT has been particularly effective in treating conditions like borderline personality disorder, suicidal ideation, and self-harm.

  1. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy (Francine Shapiro)

EMDR Therapy helps people process and resolve traumatic memories.

During EMDR sessions, the therapist guides the client through rapid eye movements or other bilateral stimulation. This process is believed to facilitate the brain’s natural ability to reprocess memories, allowing the client to better understand the past.

Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR does not require delving deeply into the trauma.

EMDR has been effective in treating PTSD, phobias, and other trauma-related concerns.

  1. TEAM CBT (David Burns)

Developed by renowned psychiatrist and author Dr. David Burns, the creator of Feeling Good, and other influential self-help books, TEAM CBT builds upon the foundational principles of traditional CBT.

TEAM CBT is often called ‘therapy on steroids,’ and delivers relief from mood disorders, habits and addictions, and relationship issues quickly and effectively by teaching clients to counter negative thoughts and prevent relapses.

A highlight of TEAM CBT is the use of the ‘five secrets of communication’ that help clients communicate skillfully in conflict-ridden situations, making TEAM CBT an excellent therapy for navigating difficult conversations.

  1. Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy (Richard Schwartz)

IFS Therapy views the self as composed of multiple, distinct “parts” or subpersonalities, each with its own perspectives, emotions, and motivations.

IFS therapists guide clients in exploring and reconciling these internal parts, fostering a sense of harmony and integration within the self.

IFS therapy can lead to greater self-understanding, and relief from PTSD and also childhood trauma.

As we’ve explored the diverse landscape of psychological therapies, it’s clear that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to mental health. Each of these five major schools of therapy offers a distinct lens through which to understand the human experience and facilitate meaningful change. The “right” approach is the one that fits your individual mental health concerns, values, and preferences.
