Trying to explain what a Product Manager (PM) does can be tricky — so I decided to break it down with an app my mom loves: WhatsApp.

The Classic Chai-Time Question

One evening, over a cup of chai, my mom asked me: “You work so hard… but what exactly do you do as a product manager?”

She’s seen me juggling meetings, sticky notes, and open tabs, but what my job actually entails wasn’t clear to her.

So, I thought: Why not explain it using something she knows well — WhatsApp?

Starting With What She Knows

“Do you use WhatsApp?” I asked.

“Of course!” she replied. “I send messages, share recipes, forward memes… and even do video calls with your grandmom and uncles.”

Perfect.

I continued, “Couple of years ago, WhatsApp was just a simple messaging app. No voice notes, no status updates, no payments — nothing fancy.”

“But over time,” I added, “they added features one by one — voice calls, video calls, status updates, payments, even group video chats.”

She nodded. “Yeah, it really keeps getting better.”

The Why Behind the What

I explained: A product manager is the person behind those changes. We ask questions like:

1. What do users need next?
2. What problems are they facing?
3. What should we build to help?
4. How do these features align with the company’s goals?”

She looked intrigued. “So, you don’t write the code, but you decide what should be built?”

“Exactly,” I smiled. “Think of me as the connector — linking users like you with the teams that develop the app.”

Making It Personal and Relatable

I gave her an example:

“Say you want to message the electrician, but you don’t want to save his number — because you’ll only use it once. That’s annoying, right?”

“Totally!” she said. “Why should I save a number I’ll never need again?”

“Well, someone like me at WhatsApp would notice this problem, talk to users facing it, validate if enough people want a fix, then work with designers and developers to create a feature — like messaging without saving a contact.”

WhatsApp’s Evolution — One Product Decision at a Time

Here’s how I explained it:
