My boosted story: How Hurricane Maria Broke Me Finding my way out of depression

Are you searching for that Medium boost?

Do you feel it’s just around the corner? You just can’t seem to catch it?

After months of trying to catch that falling star, a squigly arrow finally hit my stats page.

Here’s what you can do before you expect a boost.

Remember the unspoken Medium boosted stories rule? Boosted stories are personal, helpful, and well-written.

Think about it

I thought about the story for a long time.

I probably have 5 drafts with different titles.

But, when I started writing, I didn’t stop until the first draft was finished.

That’s how you get a personal story out. When you start and stop, the editing, the overthinking begins and it’s even more difficult to finish.

Then I walked away.

Editing is for tomorrow.

Don’t Hit Publish!

There were a few things I did before I submitted the boosted article.

I thought about where I wanted to publish it.

Where did I have the most chance of a boost?

In my case, it was being featured in Read or Die-HQ. I’ve been tossing the story idea around in my head for months and warming up Adrian, (Hi Adrian!) the boost nominator, to the idea of the story for a while.

I had high hopes that he would see the value and nominate my story.

He did. Thanks, Adrian.

Look Inward

Next, I looked at my profile.

I pinned other stories that I thought would be interesting to the Boost people, not my stories about making money on Medium. I figured they don’t care about that.

Give the curators what they want.

No one wants to waste time scrolling.

Even though they were not my best-performing or highest-earning stories, I made visible other personal stories. If the boost people did come to my profile page, I wanted them to see who I was.

Those three things are easy, actionable steps and will greatly increase your chances of a boost.

Onward! Let’s go get that Boost. ;)

X.O.,

Tan
