Are You Doing the Spring Clean this April? 5 Reasons Why You Should
I was reading a post by Ryan Holiday about taking a moment to review and a do a soft reset of your life. As as he put it, a Spring Clean! This got me thinking about my own life and the clutter I have carry every day — physically, mentally, and emotionally.
Clutter is easy to build. As you are probably like me: curious, and ambitious we tend to collect a lot stuff largely unintentionally.
The good news is that life gives you a new day to change things and what better time than spring. You can begin to create better habits that fuel you, build stronger connections with friends and co-workers, and reduce the things that feel like a burden.
Ryan points out a few ways you can approach this and some thought processes you can use. The key thing to ask yourself here is — what are the things that serve you today? What are the items that make you smile when you put them on, and which ones no longer do? What are the activities that energise you, and which ones drain you? This becomes your filter.
The 5 Steps of a Spring Clean
Chaos: Ask yourself what items or habits bring chaos into your life. You can list the people, things, areas, and activities that make your life more complicated than it needs to be. These things bring chaos and deplete your energy. But you can take action to remove them. Get rid of the excess shoes, distance yourself from people who bring you down, and do your best to minimise the activities that create chaos in your life.
Positivity: Review and optimise for the things that are making you better, wiser, healthier, and wealthier. Wealth does not have to be defined in a purely financial sense. It can mean being able to go for a run in the park on a sunny morning. Create time where you can focus on and double down on these things — especially if work or other commitments are starting to take them away from you.
Habits: Bad habits are easy to form and terribly hard to break. Like every human, I have a few of them. As I get older, I often wonder why I do some of the things I do. Sometimes they feel misguided. One of the best ways to break a habit is to replace it with something that fills that same time. Instead of going for a drink, maybe you go to the sauna or for a walk.
Focus: You are in constant competition with the world to guard your time, live with purpose, and avoid getting pulled into someone else’s agenda, life, or expectations of you — or into news stories that will never actually impact your life. Guard your time. Reduce the noise around you. Maybe only use social media on weekends. One big one for me is cutting unnecessary subscriptions. I personally don’t need that much entertainment in my life through endless streaming platforms.
For me, this is not about a cold-turkey solution. It is more about gradually winding down certain habits and activities so you can do more of the things you actually enjoy. If you get a good handle on this, it can be a huge boost for your creativity, performance, and overall enjoyment of life.
What other filters do apply in your life to bring about change?
