An interesting little PT-like that plays on the discomfort of wholly unnatural (as in human made, not supernatural) spaces.
Some of the anomalies are unsettling. Most are kind of hokey. Most of the discomfort comes from being in a simulacrum of a space where your mind plays little tricks on you. You know nothing weird should happen, but your brain makes up things. The difference is, this game renders those little strangeties as visual.
I’m not a huge fan of the gamification of it; with the whole reset to zero element. It kind of feels too punishing. But removing anomalies from the spawn pool when you “notice” them helps. It also extends the gameplay loop beyond extremely short to just very short. Still, if you accidentally “notice” an anomaly and it gets removed from the pool and you don’t see it ever again, it means you don’t get to actually see that anomaly.
A bunch of people smarter than me have written a gazillion words on the nature of “liminal” horror, so I won’t labour the point.
The Exit 8 is an okay little short experiment that doesn’t overstay its welcome. I liked it enough for the runtime. It’s not the type of game I’d want to replay, but the singular experience didn’t make me hate it. Also, just want to say, the use of the definite article in the title is bad and dumb.
