Project Overview

The main goal of this instructional design project was to create an engaging and effective learning experience for children about eye health. The project aimed to address common misconceptions, promote good habits, and ensure children understand the importance of proper eye care. To achieve this, we designed a fun and interactive course that included educational videos, a game-based quiz, and reward stickers to reinforce learning.
This project was conducted by a team of UX design students: Shubham, Sahil, Manasvi, Rucha, and Shreya, as part of our Instructional Design coursework at MIT-WPU.
Research Methods
To develop a well-informed instructional design, we conducted:
- Surveys: Gathered responses from high school students to understand their knowledge and attitudes toward eye health.
- Interviews: Consulted with Dr. Anil, an eye health specialist in Pune, India, to gain expert insights on common myths, best practices, and awareness needs.
- Observations: Studied how children interact with screens and their daily habits related to eye care.
Key Findings
- Many children and teenagers still feel uncomfortable wearing glasses due to social stigma.
- Several myths about eye health persist, such as the belief that eating carrots can completely restore eyesight.
- Kids often spend excessive time on screens at close distances, leading to increased eye strain.

Top Myths Debunked:
- Carrots can fix poor eyesight: While carrots are nutritious, they cannot restore vision once damaged.
- Wearing glasses weakens eyesight: Glasses correct vision, but they do not make eyes weaker over time.
- Children should avoid glasses as much as possible: If prescribed, children should wear them regularly to prevent further strain and damage.
Health Recommendations:
- Annual eye check-ups are crucial for detecting issues early.
- Wearing glasses if prescribed should be normalized to remove social stigma.
- Maintaining a healthy diet with essential nutrients supports eye health.
- Reducing close-up screen time and taking frequent breaks helps prevent strain.
- Good hygiene practices like washing hands and not rubbing eyes reduce infections.
Spreading Awareness Effectively:
- Use interactive learning methods like videos and games.
- Engage parents and teachers to reinforce good habits.
- Encourage peer discussions to normalize wearing glasses and maintaining eye health.
Designing the Educational Course
To make the learning process engaging and effective, we created:
- A short video featuring team members acting as children, demonstrating both bad and good eye care habits.

4. Posters and visual aids reinforcing key messages.


Target Age Group:
- Kindergarten (Jr. KG) to 4th grade primary school students.
Ensuring Engagement and Retention:
- The course is designed for classroom-led activities, where a teacher guides students through the content.
- The interactive quiz encourages group participation and discussion.
- Rewards (stickers & points) motivate children to remember and apply healthy habits.
Implementation & Testing
We piloted the project with a small group of primary school students.
Observations from the Pilot:
- Children enjoyed the interactive quiz and video demonstration.
- The group activity format made learning fun and engaging.
- Students actively participated in discussions and showed enthusiasm for eye health awareness.
Feedback from Parents & Teachers:
- Teachers found the structured approach effective in conveying health concepts.
- Parents appreciated the focus on reducing screen time and promoting healthy habits.
- Some children started accepting glasses as a normal part of life, reducing the social stigma.

This instructional design project successfully addressed eye health awareness among children in a fun and interactive way. By combining expert insights, engaging content, and reward-based learning, we were able to create a meaningful educational experience. Moving forward, scaling this initiative can contribute to healthier vision habits among the younger generation.
