“The doorway for the lowest side chamber was on the right side of the house; and they would go up by winding stairs to the middle story, and from the middle to the third.” 1 Kings 6:8 NASB
What’s the significance of the winding staircase? It allows us to achieve the maximum height in the fastest time and within the smallest space.
Minimum effort, maximum results.
The Hebrew word for ‘winding stairs’ in the verse is לוּל. Interestingly, this word occurs only once in the scripture, only in this verse.
What do the Hebrew letters mean?
ל Lamed is a picture of the shepherds staff ו Vav is a picture of a tent peg or a nail, it also represents the number 6 (man)
Do you see the picture? לוּל (lamed-vav-lamed)
The first lamed shows the shepherd prodding from the back. The next lamed shows the shepherd leading from the front. The vav connects the two lameds, and it also signifies man — that’s us in the middle!
What does this mean?
Step by step, as we move up the winding stairs to higher levels, we can rest in the fact that Jesus our Good Shepherd leads us from the front, and He protects us from the back. Beginning and the End.
