Dissection of a Good CV

A good CV has 3 elements that work together: CV design that is modern and attractive. Layout that draws attention to important sections. Content that is relevant and conveys important information quickly.

Each of these elements are important and I explain why below.

CV writing isn’t just about design or content. It’s about the three elements working together to make the whole stand out.

Design is the overall look of the CV, including colors, borders, and shapes. Design should be relevant to the profession. For some industries, a more fancy and creative design is needed, such as for graphic designers, photographers, and art professionals. For these jobs, a CV design using photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, or other graphics designing software that shows the job candidate's skill is preferred. For most other professions, a simpler design will work just as well. Sometimes simple is preferred. However, a plain text design should be avoided and your design should have some creativity to make it stand out and be easier on the eye.

Layout refers to where the different sections of a CV are placed. The correct layout is uncluttered, draws attention to important areas, and makes reading the CV easier.

Content refers to the details about a person’s career. It includes information about experience, education, skills, summary, and any other text found on a CV.

A good CV / resume will incorporate all three elements to make it effective and stand out.

It's important to pay attention to each of these elements. Any one of them not being optimal can make the CV ineffective. Because hiring managers and recruiters only look over a CV for just 7 seconds in the initial assessment stage, it's important that all the elements are working together to attract attention to the most important information.

When the CV stands out because of design, content, and layout, you can have your job application get ahead of others applying for the same job.
