USB Drive Not Working? 7 Safe Checks Before You Format It

When a USB drive stops working, Windows often nudges you toward the fastest-looking fix: format the drive. Do not start there. Formatting may make the device usable again, but it can also remove the file system map that helps recovery tools rebuild your folders.

Begin with hardware checks. Try a different USB port, preferably one directly on the computer rather than a hub. Try another computer. Inspect the connector for bending, heat, or loose movement. If the drive gets unusually hot or disconnects repeatedly, unplug it and avoid repeated attempts.

Next, check whether Windows can see the device. Press Windows + X, open Disk Management, and look for the USB drive by size.
