The first Saturday of June always belonged to Malik’s annual cookout.
Friendly, outgoing, and impossible not to like, Malik had a gift for bringing people together. His backyard buzzed with music, laughter, and the scent of charcoal drifting through the warm afternoon air.
Jordan balanced a paper plate loaded with a hot dog and potato salad when someone called his name. He turned to find Denise smiling at him.
For a moment, neither spoke.
“You went to Lincoln Elementary,” she finally said.
Jordan laughed. “You sat two rows over from me in Mrs. Carter’s class.”
“I can’t believe you remember that,” she said, shocked and pleasantly intrigued.
“Neither can I. But don’t ask what I had for dinner last night,” he said, smiling.
They had known each other for years without really knowing each other. They belonged to different circles, played different sports, and eventually attended different high schools before enrolling at separate colleges only 20 minutes apart.
Yet talking now felt effortless.
They swapped stories about part-time jobs, difficult exams, bad dates, and summer plans. Every conversation uncovered another shared interest, from favorite movies to late-night walks amid the moonlight.
When Malik announced the pool was open, they joined everyone else. As they splashed and joked with friends, Jordan found himself drawn to Denise’s welcoming smile, while she couldn’t help noticing the quiet confidence that had replaced the shy boy she barely remembered.
Later, guests drifted toward the changing cabana. Denise was rinsing her hair when the door opened.
“Oh, I’m sorry…” Jordan stopped, clearly expecting an empty room.
She stood in her bikini, water streaming down her shoulders. His swim trunks clung tightly to him from the pool.
“I can come back.”
“It’s okay,” she said. “There’s plenty of room.”
The cabana suddenly felt much smaller. Denise became acutely aware of the water on her skin, the way her bikini clung to her, and the fact that she was nearly naked in front of Jordan.
As he tried hard to fight the arousal increasing within his trunks, Jordan wondered if she still saw the lanky, awkward boy from their elementary school days, or if she noticed the broad shoulders and defined frame he’d carved out for himself in the years since.
He smiled nervously. “We’ve technically known each other for 15 years, but somehow it feels like we’re only talking to each other for the first time now.”
“Maybe it just took us 15 years for us to notice each other,” she said softly.
Any self-consciousness she’d felt about standing before him alone in a wet bikini had quietly faded. She no longer seemed concerned about her own state of undress — or his.
A comfortable silence settled between them before Jordan reached for her hand. She took it without hesitation.
“I’ve had a really good day,” he admitted.
“So have I.”
As their eyes met, he leaned in slowly, giving her every chance to step away. Instead, she closed the distance.
Their first kiss was soft, lingering, and filled with the excitement of experiencing something unexpected. When they finally separated, both were smiling.
“We should probably get back before everyone starts looking for us,” Denise whispered.
“Probably.”
Neither moved.
After another quiet moment, Jordan gently cupped her face and kissed her again. This kiss was slower, less about sudden attraction than the promise of something worth exploring.
“I don’t want this to end with today,” he murmured.
Denise smiled warmly. “Neither do I. But whatever this is … I want us to take our time.”
Jordan nodded, unable to hide his grin.
“Me too,” he said. “Summer’s only just beginning. We’ve got a whole season to discover each other.”
