Most North American buyers can tell you the lead time for Baltic birch (30 days) or Brazilian Ipe (45 days). Ask them about Cameroon, and you get uncertainty.

That’s a problem, because Central Africa — particularly Cameroon, Gabon, and the Republic of Congo — produces some of the world’s most sought-after tropical hardwood species. Sapele, Iroko, Padauk, Doussie, Moabi. Species that can’t be sourced anywhere else at commercial scale.

But the supply chain from Douala to Newark isn’t intuitive. The regulatory environment is different. The logistics are complex. And if you don’t understand how West African timber moves from forest to port, you’re flying blind on lead times, compliance risk, and quality control.

Why Cameroon?

Central Africa’s timber belt runs from Cameroon through Gabon, Republic of Congo, and into the Democratic Republic of Congo. It’s one of the world’s last significant tropical rainforest regions, and it produces species you can’t get from Southeast Asia or South America.

2. Regulatory Environment

Cameroon’s forestry sector operates under a structured legal framework:

  • Forestry concessions are government-managed, with permits issued for specific harvest zones
  • Annual cutting quotas limit over-harvesting
  • Species-specific regulations protect endangered or slow-growing trees (e.g., Bubinga is restricted)
  • Export documentation includes phytosanitary certificates, chain-of-custody proof, and FLEGT licensing for European markets

This structure creates accountability. Buyers working with Cameroonian suppliers who own concessions and mills get cleaner documentation than aggregators sourcing from informal channels.

3. Port Infrastructure

Cameroon has two major timber export ports:

Port of Douala (primary)

  • Handles 80%+ of Cameroon’s timber exports
  • Container facilities, deep-water berths, customs infrastructure
  • Congestion during peak season (Jan-April) can add 7–10 days to lead times

Port of Kribi (secondary, growing)

The Journey from Forest to Port

Here’s what actually happens between “order placed” and “container arrives in Newark”:

Step 1: Forestry Permits and Harvest (Days 1–10)

Timber can only be harvested from legal concessions with valid permits. In Cameroon, concession holders submit annual harvest plans to the Ministry of Forestry, specifying species, volumes, and zones.

For a buyer, this means:

  • Verify your supplier holds concessions (not just aggregating from informal loggers)
  • Request copies of forestry permits (required for Lacey Act compliance)
  • Understand seasonal constraints (rainy season limits access to certain forest zones)

Kiln-drying is the bottleneck. Most West African mills air-dry because kilns are expensive and energy-intensive. If you spec kiln-dried material (which you should for North American climates), factor in 14–21 days of drying time post-sawing.

Step 3: Export Documentation (Days 25–35)

Cameroon requires several export documents:

  • Phytosanitary certificate (confirms material is pest-free, issued by Ministry of Agriculture)
  • CITES permit (if applicable — required for certain restricted species like Bubinga)
  • Certificate of origin (confirms legal harvest, issued by Ministry of Forestry)
  • Bill of lading (shipping document)

For U.S. importers, the critical piece is Lacey Act compliance. You must declare:

  • Scientific species name (e.g., Entandrophragma cylindricum for Sapele, not just “Sapele”)
  • Harvest country and region (e.g., “Cameroon, East Region”)
  • Quantity in cubic meters
  • Legal harvest proof (forestry permits, concession documentation)

Aggregators often struggle here because they’re sourcing from multiple mills/concessions and can’t provide clean chain-of-custody. Origin-based suppliers generate this documentation natively.

Step 4: Container Consolidation and Shipping (Days 35–50)

Once material is milled, dried, graded, and documented, it’s loaded into 40' containers at the port (Douala or Kribi).

Container capacity:

  • Standard 40' container holds ~25–28 cubic meters of sawn timber (varies by species density)
  • Loading takes 1–2 days (stacking, securing, moisture barrier installation)

Shipping routes:

  • Douala → U.S. East Coast (Newark, Savannah, Charleston): 18–25 days transit
  • Douala → U.S. Gulf Coast (Houston): 20–28 days transit
  • Douala → U.S. West Coast (Long Beach): 35–40 days transit (longer route)

Current shipping environment (May 2026): Strait of Hormuz disruptions have rerouted vessels around the Cape of Good Hope, adding 7–10 days to transit and increasing container costs by 30–50%. Buyers should factor this into lead time and budget projections.

Step 5: U.S. Customs Clearance and Delivery (Days 50–60)

When the container arrives at a U.S. port, it goes through:

  • Customs inspection (Lacey Act declaration review, species verification)
  • USDA phytosanitary inspection (pest/disease check)
  • Release and inland transport (to buyer’s warehouse or job site)

Common customs delays:

  • Incomplete Lacey Act declarations (missing scientific name, harvest region, or permit documentation)
  • Species misidentification (declared as Sapele, but inspector suspects it’s Sipo — requires lab testing)
  • Phytosanitary holds (if bark is present, or if wood shows signs of infestation)

These delays can add 5–14 days. Prevention is simple: work with suppliers who provide complete, accurate documentation upfront.

Total lead time: 50–60 days from order to delivery (Douala → U.S. East Coast). West Coast adds 10–15 days. Rush orders aren’t realistic — tropical hardwood logistics can’t be compressed like domestic softwood.

What the Rainy Season Actually Means

Cameroon’s rainy season runs May through October, with peak rainfall in June-September. Here’s how it impacts supply chains:

Forest access: Logging roads become impassable. Heavy equipment gets stuck. Timber extraction slows or stops entirely in certain zones. If your supplier is harvesting during rainy season, expect delays.

Milling operations: Mills continue operating, but log supply from the forest slows. If you’re ordering custom specs (non-standard dimensions, specific grades), the mill may need to wait for post-rainy-season log inventory.

Port logistics: Inland transport from mill to port takes longer (muddy roads, truck breakdowns). Container loading schedules shift.

Buyer strategy:

  • Place orders in November-April (dry season) for fastest turnaround
  • If ordering during rainy season, add 10–20 days to standard lead time
  • Consider pre-ordering inventory before rainy season if you have predictable demand

Cameroonian mills don’t always grade to strict NHLA standards. A board marked “FAS” might include sap streaks, small knots, or color variation that wouldn’t pass FAS in a U.S. mill.

  • Specify defect tolerances in writing (“no sap, no knots >5mm diameter”)
  • Work with suppliers who control the mill and can train graders to your standards

2. Moisture Content Issues

Air-dried material (16–18% MC) is cheaper and faster than kiln-dried (12% MC). Some suppliers ship air-dried and claim it’s “kiln-dried” to meet the spec.

How to verify:

  • Request moisture meter readings pre-shipment
  • Specify kiln schedule documentation
  • Inspect material upon arrival (portable moisture meter, random board sampling)

Kiln-dried costs more, but warping claims cost even more.

3. Species Substitution

Iroko and Okan look similar. Sapele and Sipo are close. A dishonest supplier might substitute a cheaper species and hope you don’t notice.

How to prevent:

  • Require scientific species name on all documentation (Lacey Act forces this anyway)
  • Work with suppliers who have reputational skin in the game (long-term operations, not fly-by-night brokers)
  • Inspect shipments upon arrival (color, grain, density should match spec)

4. Port Delays and Demurrage

If your container sits at Douala waiting for export permits, or if there’s port congestion, delays compound. Worse, if your container arrives in Newark and you’re not ready to clear it, demurrage fees (container rental while it sits at port) add up fast.

How to manage:

  • Confirm export documentation is complete before container is loaded
  • Have customs broker lined up and ready before container departs Cameroon
  • Track shipment actively (don’t assume “it’ll arrive when it arrives”)

Sustainability and Compliance

Cameroon has committed to FLEGT (Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade) licensing, which means timber exported to the EU must meet legality standards. The U.S. doesn’t require FLEGT, but Lacey Act requirements are similar.

What buyers need:

  • Proof of legal harvest (forestry permits from Ministry of Forestry)
  • Chain-of-custody documentation (from concession → mill → port → export)
  • Species verification (scientific name, harvest region)

Origin-based suppliers who own concessions can provide this documentation because they generate it. Aggregators sourcing from informal channels can’t.

Certification options:

  • FSC (Forest Stewardship Council): Third-party certification for sustainable forestry. Few Cameroonian concessions are FSC-certified yet, but it’s growing.
  • PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification): Alternative to FSC, less common in Central Africa.

Underrated Species Buyers Should Consider

Most buyers default to Sapele or Iroko because they’re well-known. But Cameroon produces other species worth exploring:

Moabi (Baillonella toxisperma)

  • Dense, reddish-brown, excellent dimensional stability
  • Great for flooring (resists denting, attractive grain)
  • Underutilized because it’s less known than Doussie, but comparable performance at lower cost

Tali (Erythrophleum spp.)

  • Extremely hard, yellowish-brown heartwood
  • Ideal for heavy-traffic commercial flooring
  • Often overlooked in favor of Iroko, but equally durable

Sipo (Entandrophragma utile)

  • Mahogany-like appearance and workability
  • Excellent for joinery, interior trim, furniture
  • Lower-cost alternative to Sapele with similar performance

If you’re willing to explore beyond the top 3–4 species, you can find performance and pricing advantages. Just make sure your supplier can explain the species’ properties, applications, and workability — don’t buy based on price alone.

Final Thought

Sourcing tropical hardwood from Cameroon isn’t plug-and-play. The supply chain is longer, the documentation is more complex, and the species-specific knowledge requirement is higher than domestic lumber.

But for buyers who need Sapele, Iroko, Padauk, or Doussie — species that can’t be sourced elsewhere at scale — Cameroon is non-negotiable. And understanding the supply chain mechanics (forest → mill → port → customs → delivery) is how you avoid expensive mistakes.

Work with suppliers who’ve operated in-country for years (or decades). Who own concessions and mills. Who can walk you through every step from harvest permit to container arrival. Who provide complete documentation without you having to chase it.

Because in West African timber, the supply chain is the product. A supplier who can’t explain how material moves from Douala to your warehouse probably doesn’t control it. And if they don’t control it, you’re absorbing the risk.
