The embedded video above is the primary walkthrough. This article is a step-by-step written companion for filmmakers who want to skim, double-check settings, or confirm they’re exporting the cleanest possible DCP master.
What This Tutorial Is (and Isn’t)
This tutorial covers:
- Exporting a DCP-ready master file from DaVinci Resolve
- Correct handling of 5.1 surround audio
- Avoiding stereo bus contamination during export
This tutorial does not cover:
- Loudness standards or mixing practices
- DCP encoding itself
- Festival-specific delivery rules
This assumes your 5.1 mix is already final and approved by your sound mixer.
Step 1: Confirm Timeline Settings
Before touching audio or export settings, confirm your timeline is correct.
- Right-click your timeline
- Choose Timeline Settings
- Confirm:
- Resolution
- Frame rate
- Playback settings
These should match the format your film will be mastered and delivered in.
Click OK when everything looks correct.
Step 2: Add the Final Picture (and Remove Stereo Audio)
- Place your final picture file on the timeline
- If the film file includes stereo audio, remove it
- This stereo track is not what you want to export
- Leaving it in can cause confusion later
At this point, your timeline should contain picture only (no usable audio yet).
Step 3: Import the 5.1 Surround Mix
- Drag your 5.1 surround mix from your sound mixer onto the timeline
- DaVinci Resolve will automatically identify it as a 5.1 mix
- Place it beneath the picture on the timeline
DaVinci is very good at recognizing surround stems and combining them into a single 5.1 track.
Step 4: Remove Any Remaining Stereo Tracks
If your original picture file added a stereo track:
- Right-click that stereo track
- Delete it
You should now have:
- One picture track (V1)
- One 5.1 surround audio track (A1)
Nothing else.
Step 5: Verify Playback in Fairlight
Before exporting, always confirm playback.
- Switch to the Fairlight page
- Play several dialogue and effects-heavy moments
- Watch the meters carefully
You should see:
- Independent activity across all six channels
- Correct speaker mapping
- No unexpected stereo activity
If something looks wrong here, fix it before exporting.
Step 6: Open the Deliver Page
- Go to the Deliver tab
- Choose a ProRes master preset
Acceptable codecs for DCP mastering include:
- Apple ProRes 422
- Apple ProRes 422 HQ
- Apple ProRes 4444
Any of these are suitable unless otherwise specified.
Step 7: Choose the Correct Audio Source (Important)
This is a critical step.
Under Audio settings on the Deliver page:
- Select the 5.1 surround track directly
- Set the source to Timeline Track 1 (or whichever track your 5.1 audio lives on)
Why this matters
By selecting the 5.1 track directly:
- You bypass the stereo bus entirely
- You avoid any unintended effects or processing
- You export the purest possible version of your mix
Think of this as exporting the audio straight from the mixer, untouched.
Step 8: Name and Render
- Name your file clearly (include versioning if needed)
- Choose your destination
- Add the job to the Render Queue
- Click Render All
Once rendering completes, your file is ready for DCP mastering.
Final Checklist Before DCP Creation
Before sending this file off for DCP mastering, confirm:
- Timeline settings match final delivery specs
- Only one 5.1 surround track is present
- Stereo audio has been removed
- Playback verified in Fairlight
- ProRes master exported successfully
Common Questions
Can I use this file directly to screen in festivals?
No. This file is a film master, not a DCP itself. It must still be encoded into a DCP format to play in theaters.
Why does channel order matter so much?
Incorrect ordering can cause dialogue to play through surround speakers or bass to appear in the wrong channel — issues that often aren’t caught until theatrical playback.
If you have any questions about DCP mastering, our technicians will recommend the one what works best for your film based on industry-standard best practices.
