THE AMERICAN IMMIGRATION “CRISIS”
Oh dear me, the doing’ south of the border. It seems Texas Governor Abbott, and Felon General Paxton are out to prove they’re the worst people in America. No small challenge given Republicans these days.
You’d think that they’d learn from past disasters and fix the Electrical Grid. But hey, why govern when you can wave a bloody shirt.
So apparently, there is an immigration ‘crisis’ in America. This has gotten to the points where Abbott is calling up Wile E. Coyote’s Acme company to buy ludicrous border barriers, like a series of coloured floats to divide a river.
Unfortunately, unlike Loony Toons, Abbott’s devices are actively dangerous and have gotten people killed. Three people were drowned, recently, two of them children. They were called ‘illegal immigrants’ but the bottom line is that they were people. Apparently Texas police obstructed Federal border patrol in the area. It’s not the first time, apparently there were deaths in August.
Finally, Biden went to Court to remove the razor wire, because the border is after all Federal Jurisdiction. Apparently, Paxton and Abbott forgot the Civil War happened or how it turned out. Ultimately, the Supreme Court found for Biden 5 to 4, should have been 9 to 0, but this is the Supreme Court now.
All this takes place in the context of MAGA screaming themselves hoarse over illegal immigration, it’s really quite astonishing, holding their breaths until they turn red, throwing themselves on the floor kicking and screaming, holding Ukraine hostage.
Among the tactics of DeSantis and Abbott is kidnapping ‘immigrants’ and then shipping them up north to places like Boston, or New York or Cape Cod, to take care of.
Yes, because if you’re terrified of illegal immigrants, the thing to do is to make sure that they bypass all the regional border security and have a head start.
The point is that when it comes to immigration, nothing Americans say or do makes a lick of sense, and it seems to all come down to endless, senseless cruelty.
Canada, Australia most of Europe has this immigration policy where we are welcome and open to educated, skilled immigrants, support families and actively control and police illegal immigration.
The United States maintains an immigration system that seems to be a bizarre Rube Goldberg apparatus and series of near impossible bureaucratic contortions where it’s almost impossible to obtain legal status and citizenship without a marriage or family.
But on the other hand, it’s incredibly easy to be an illegal immigrant, either entering legally and overstaying, or crossing over. The whole thing being ridiculously mismanaged, particularly considering the ludicrously hysterical screeching about it.
None of it makes any sense.
And frankly, if all the screeching was genuine, one wonders why Americans simply don’t do something about it. This is, after all, the richest and most powerful country in the world, with the ability to expend insane amounts of money on the most trivial things. There’s no reason for helplessness.
But here’s the thing: America has exactly the immigration system it really wants.
America doesn’t want highly educated and/or highly skilled persons who would be highly demanding in terms of wages and working conditions and who would be competing with the existing highly educated and/or highly skilled population.
The ‘high education/high skill’ population, the middle class, is actually in economic free fall and contraction, and desperately scrambling to hold onto their place in the world, they’re desperate to find a secure place in the middle class for their children, and any kind of social ambition in working classes is to get education and skill and make it into a middle class that’s harder than ever to access.
The last thing they want is more competition. Certainly not more permanent competition.
On the other hand American business is absolutely desperate for low wage, low status, no right or limited rights workers which it can employ on a seasonal or casual basis, dismiss at will, offer extremely poor working conditions or outright abuse, which are entirely union proof, disposable, have no bargaining leverage at all.
Yes, it’s a downside that if they stay long enough their children are born with citizenship. But with sufficiently punitive enforcement, you can get them out before many of them give birth, or you can get their parents out and they take their citizen children with them, or at worse, they’re a new impoverished citizen underclass.
The reality is that America has exactly the immigration system, legal and illegal, that it wants.
All the hysteria is mainly political and cosmetic, and the truth is that despite the hysteria, it will not change, because deep down, it is satisfactory, at least in the short term.
