The Four Pillars and Their Losses

Defending Stratification, Completeness, Uniqueness, and the Empty Envelope from the Premise of Genuine Agency

Abstract

This essay defends the four structural commitments at the heart of Path-Bound Agency — stratification, completeness, uniqueness, and the empty envelope (no-alteration) — from a single premise: the genuineness of agency. Where the supporting corpus derives these commitments architecturally, arguing from structure to agency, the present essay argues in the reverse direction, from agency to structure. A participant premise (Section 3) establishes that agency, in the very mode by which it operates, is participant rather than authorial: authors legislate, participants persuade, and authorship over reality is evidenced by constitution, not argumentation. Internal authorship, were it to exist, could constitute only nested frameworks: no entity authors the framework it inhabits. The framework names its defeat condition openly: a demonstrated act of authorship by the agency — reality created rather than argued for — would defeat the premise of participant status and the essay with it. Four structural reductios (Section 4–7) then show that the loss of each pillar collapses the conditions under which participant agency has substantive ground. Losing stratification identifies reality with consciousness — against the observed model–reality gap and the dual adequacy of field and particle representations — and faces a temporal dilemma whose two horns, a completed layer and an unfolding one, each render agency illusion. Losing completeness reduces what the participant articulates as free-will to permission under an external author’s curation; alongside it, adaptive gatekeeping within the informational layer yields enforced-free-will, and the demand to exceed the lattice is the authorship illusion — three pressures locating completeness as the ceiling of all potential nodes, at which the participant’s articulation and the architecture converge. Losing uniqueness — supposed for contradiction through the immortal emperor’s self-duplication — yields divergence without duplication or unison without agency and consciousness, so uniqueness is derived rather than assumed, and the universalized demand for absolute free-will fails against the same constraint. Losing the empty envelope costs either perpetual send-alter-reset instability or terminal branching, illustrated through the cosmic reset of Liu’s Death’s End. A unifying diagnostic runs through all four losses: each is an authorial demand issued, by argument, from a participant position — and a demand advanced by argument rather than demonstration bears, on the evidence of its own mode, the participant’s signature.
