A few years ago, I recall my friends excitedly sharing their videos from trips to Spain. They beamed with joy as they recounted their adventures, but in that moment, a heavy sadness filled my heart.

Watching the video of the bullfighting, a dark cloud settled over me, and I felt a deep sense of loss. I turned away, unable to share their excitement, unwilling to witness a celebration of something that left me feeling so hollow and disconnected from the joy that surrounded me..

The sport perpetuates unnecessary suffering for bulls, leading to injuries and death for these majestic animals. Although I have only witnessed it once from a friend’s video, the pain inflicted upon the animal left a lasting impression on me. I could never bring myself to attend a live event that subjects animals to such cruelty.

I was curious about what happens after the bullfight.

I learned that after a bullfight, the bull often meets a tragic fate, as it is typically killed in the ring by the matador. Its body is then taken to a slaughterhouse for processing into meat, a procedure that can feel quite harsh. However, in rare and heartwarming instances, if the bull shows exceptional bravery and spirit during the fight, it may be "pardoned" and granted a chance to live, reminding us that these animals have remarkable strength and dignity.

In the bullfighting arena, the most common and tragic outcome is the death of the bull, often at the hands of the matador wielding a sword. This act, while a traditional part of the spectacle, evokes deep emotions and raises questions about the ethics of such events.

In rare instances when a bull earns an "indulto"—a heartfelt pardon from both the crowd and the bullfighter for showcasing remarkable fighting spirit and skill—it is given the gift of life.

The magnificent creature is celebrated not just for its bravery and strength but also as a symbol of resilience and honor, inspiring all who witness its valor.

The Banderillas:

I ask about the spiked end wooden sticks on the animal’s shoulder.

These are cruel instruments of suffering, designed to drain the bull’s strength, especially its neck and shoulder muscles. As the bull struggles, it becomes increasingly difficult for it to lift its head high, robbing it of its pride and dignity.

This tragic weakening helps the matador make his final act seem almost effortless against what was once a mighty creature.

In preparation for the death blow, the banderillas inflict misery, forcing the bull to lower its head in despair. This heart-wrenching position serves as a prelude to a swift and violent end, as the matador relies on this vulnerability to insert the sword into the cervical vertebrae, sealing the animal’s fate and extinguishing a life filled with pain and confusion.

“Why is blood flowing and bubbling from the animal’s mouth and nostrils?" I ask.

In reality, most matadors miss the target, wounding the bull’s lungs and bronchial tubes, leading to blood flowing and bubbling from the animal’s mouth and nose.

Praise God, the sport is banned in some countries and regions, such as Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Cuba.

• Phased Out: Colombia is phasing out bullfighting, with a full ban expected in 2027.
