SysML v2 Model User Certification: Exam Debrief & Lessons Learned
In early June, just as the SysML v2 Model User exam became publicly available (it is no longer in Beta), I sat the exam and earned my SysML v2 Model User (MU) credential. This post is a first-hand summary of what the exam is actually like, how I prepared for it, and which resources I leaned on the most — written for anyone considering the same path.

What the Exam Looks Like
The exam consists of 100 questions, but not all of them count toward your result. Here is how the scoring works:
- The maximum score is 90 points.
- You earn 1 point for each correctly answered scored question.
- 10 of the 100 questions are unscored. These exist so the exam authors can evaluate how those questions perform psychometrically before deciding whether to use them in the future.
- The passing score is 63 (out of 90).
So while you face 100 questions, only 90 of them contribute to your final score — and you do not know which 10 are the unscored ones while you are taking the exam.
How Hard Is It, Really?
Honestly, the exam was more challenging than I expected. A few takeaways:
- Very few questions are pure recall. Memorization alone will not carry you. The large majority of questions require you to genuinely understand SysML v2 — not just remember definitions, but reason about how the language behaves.
- The reading load is heavy. Many questions are long, and getting through them takes real time and attention.
- The diagram-interpretation questions are mentally taxing. Reading and reasoning over models on the screen consumes a surprising amount of cognitive energy, and these questions add up over the course of the exam.
If you go in expecting a quick definitions quiz, you will be caught off guard. Plan for an exam that tests comprehension and applied reasoning.
My Background and Preparation
I started preparing in early April and sat the exam in early June — roughly two months of study, done mostly in my spare time around work, plus weekends and holidays.
For context on where I was starting from: I have 20+ years of C++ development experience, having worked on a number of small-to-mid-sized projects, two of which were around 100,000 lines of code. That engineering background helped with the structural and systems-thinking aspects of the material, but SysML v2 is its own world — the modeling concepts still required dedicated study.
Why It’s Worth Doing
A few reasons I’d recommend pursuing this certification:
- It deepens your understanding of SysML v2 — especially the finer details and concepts you might otherwise skim over or never encounter in day-to-day work.
- It gives you a deadline-driven learning goal. Having a fixed exam date is a powerful forcing function for actually finishing the material.
- It produces a recognized achievement — a credential that the broader community acknowledges.
The Resources I Used
Here are the materials I relied on, along with my honest notes on each.
1. OMG Systems Modeling Language™ (SysML®) Version 2.0 — Part 1: Language Specification Dense and hard to read, but it is the single source of truth (SSOT) for SysML v2. When you need the definitive answer, this is where it lives.
2. Kernel Modeling Language™ (KerML™) Version 1.0 Also dense and difficult, but the SSOT for KerML, which underpins SysML v2.
3. Introduction to the SysML v2 Language — Textual Notation Relatively approachable, but with a very high information density. You get a lot per page.
4. Introduction to the SysML v2 Language — Graphical Notation Also relatively readable, and likewise information-dense.
5. The SysML v2 Book (Pre-release) — Tim Weilkiens and Vince Molnár I enjoyed the writing style of this one; it’s accessible and easy to follow. The caveat is that it’s still a pre-release, so many sections are incomplete.
6. SysML v2 Certification Model User: Preparation with Sample Questions — Tim Weilkiens and Vince Molnár The practice questions here are reasonably calibrated, though still somewhat easier than the real exam.
7. SysML v2 — Level 1 (Model User) Bundle — CameoMagic The questions skew on the easier side, and a few of the explanations aren’t especially clear.
8. Advent of SysML v2 — Sensmetry Inc. I used this mainly for its video walkthroughs, which helped me connect the dots across SysML v2 as a whole.
9. https://sysmlv2exam.com/ Useful for learning concepts through practice questions. Be aware that some SysML v1 material is mixed in, but on balance it’s a helpful supplement.
Practical Tips That Made a Difference
Beyond the reading materials, two pieces of advice stand out as the things I’d most want a future candidate to hear.
1. Build your stamina with full-length, timed practice runs. Before the real exam, put yourself through a few 180-minute high-intensity question sessions under exam-like conditions. The actual exam is as much a test of mental endurance as of knowledge — sustaining focus across long, reading-heavy questions and demanding diagram interpretation for three straight hours is genuinely draining. Training at that intensity beforehand means the format and the fatigue won’t catch you by surprise on exam day, and you’ll have learned how to pace yourself.
2. Lean heavily on AI to deepen your understanding. Make broad use of tools like Claude, Gemini, and ChatGPT to study SysML v2. They are excellent for clarifying obscure passages in the specifications, working through concepts you find confusing, comparing the textual and graphical notations, generating and critiquing practice questions, and stress-testing your own understanding by explaining ideas back to the model. Treat the specs as your source of truth and the AI as a tireless tutor that helps you actually internalize them — the combination accelerated my learning considerably.
3. Make full use of the built-in Review Flag. Every question screen has a flag (mark-for-review) control. Whenever you’re unsure whether your answer is correct, flag that question — or jot its number on your erasable board — so you can come back to it after finishing the rest. With 100 questions, hunting back through everything at the end is a huge time sink; a flagged list (or a quick note on the board) lets you jump straight to the ones you actually wanted to revisit. This alone saves a great deal of time during the review pass.
Final Thoughts
The SysML v2 Model User exam rewards genuine comprehension over memorization. With a focused two-month effort built around the official specifications as your source of truth — supplemented by the more readable introductions, books, and practice question sets above, and accelerated by AI tutors like Claude, Gemini, and ChatGPT — it’s an achievable and worthwhile goal. Expect a demanding, reading-heavy exam, train your stamina with full-length timed runs, flag the questions you want to revisit, pace yourself through the diagram questions, and you’ll be well positioned to walk away with the credential.
