The Quiet After

Night is the only time I don’t have to pretend.

The world finally shuts the hell up. No expectations. No roles to play. No one watching to make sure I’m standing the way I’m supposed to stand or talking the way I’m supposed to talk.

Just me.

And that’s when it gets loud.

I lay there staring at the ceiling, the dark wrapping around me like it knows my secrets. It’s funny how silence can feel heavier than noise. During the day, I can drown everything out — work, people, responsibilities. I can stay busy enough to not think.

But at night?

There’s nowhere to hide.

That voice creeps in. Not the one I’ve been trained to use — the deep, rough, “man up” voice. No… the other one. The one I buried so deep I almost convinced myself it wasn’t real.

Almost.

It whispers at first.

This isn’t you.

I roll over. Try to shake it off. Try to tell myself the same lies I’ve been feeding myself for 40-some years.

You’re fine. This is normal. Just go to sleep.

But the voice doesn’t stop anymore.

It hasn’t stopped in a long time.

It gets stronger.

How much longer are you going to do this?

That question hits different at night. During the day, I can outrun it. At night, it sits on my chest like a weight I can’t push off.

I think about everything I built. The life. The family. The version of me everyone knows.

And then I think about me.

The real me.

The one that only exists in these quiet hours when nobody’s around to judge, question, or look at me like I’ve lost my damn mind.

I used to think this feeling would go away.

That if I worked harder… drank more… stayed busy enough… I could outrun it.

I tried.

God, I tried.

But you can’t outrun yourself.

Not forever.

The clock glows beside me. 2:17 AM.

Of course it is.

That hour where your thoughts don’t just knock — they kick the door in.

I sit up, run my hands over my face, and for a second… just a second… I let myself imagine it.

No pretending.

No hiding.

No forcing a square peg into a round hole until my hands bleed.

Just… living.

Breathing.

Being.

It feels impossible.

And at the same time, it feels like the only thing that’s ever made sense.

That’s the part that scares me the most.

Not that I might be wrong…

…but that I’ve known the truth all along.

I swing my legs over the side of the bed and just sit there in the dark.

Caught between two lives.

One I built.

One I’ve been too afraid to live.

And somewhere in that silence, I realize something I can’t unhear.

The voice isn’t trying to tear me down.

It’s trying to set me free
