Belly’s Right & Why I Don’t Want to Be Like Belly in TSITP Series
“Yes, I think I always love him a little. But, I choose you and not him.”
Belly was right, maybe sometimes we do keep a little space for someone from the past.
In The Summer I Turned Pretty season 3 episode 8, there’s a moment that feels both tender and painful. Jere finally realizes that Belly still holds a small flame for Conrad. And Belly, with honesty that cuts like glass, admits it. She says, “Yes, a part of me will always love him. There will always be a little space for him in my heart. But I choose you.”
It is a cruel truth wrapped in a declaration of love. Wrong, yet human.
When I saw that scene, I felt a strange ache. Not because I stand on either side of the love triangle, but because I understood her. I know what it feels like to struggle with the weight of a first love. To hold on to the memory of someone who once seemed larger than life, your childhood dream, your perfect picture of love, your anchor in moments of innocence. Even when time moves forward, that person lingers. They become less of a person, more of an idea, an idealized shadow. And it’s hard to let that shadow go.
But I don’t want to be like Belly. I don’t want to stand in my present while secretly clutching pieces of my past. I don’t want to promise love to someone new while reserving a quiet corner of my heart for someone who doesn’t belong in my future. I want to end my story with the past, not drag it into the chapters yet to come.
The truth is, the past is not ours to keep. No matter how beautiful, it cannot return in the same way. No matter how warm, it cannot protect us forever. It shaped us, yes, but it was never meant to contain us.
And so I want to let go. I want to gently fold those memories like letters that no longer need to be sent. I want to carry the lessons, not the longing. To say thank you to the moments that once made me believe in love, but to no longer seek love in them.
Because when I finally meet the person who will walk beside me in the future, I want to choose them wholeheartedly. With no ghost standing between us. With no shadow haunting the edges of my heart. I want to look at them and know that my love is not divided between what was and what could be.
The past will always be a part of me, but it will not define me.
I don’t want to be trapped in the memory of what could have been. I want to be free to love what will be.
