We are the only species on Earth that can simultaneously understand how propaganda works and then immediately fall for propaganda. Every single time. With enthusiasm.

So when I tell you that someone figured out, decades ago, how to map the exact psychological architecture of your brain, find the load-bearing walls, and then quietly kick them out from under you — I don’t want you to be outraged. Outrage is what they want. I want you to sit with the specific, precise, humiliating recognition that you have been had. That we have all been had. That the mechanism for having us was built in plain sight, documented in peer-reviewed journals, presented at marketing conferences, and is currently running, right now, on the device you are holding in your hand.

Let’s walk through it. Slowly. Because the details are where the real ugliness lives.

PART ONE: THE TOTALLY INNOCENT MARKETING TOOL THAT WILL DESTROY YOU

It starts with something called psychographic segmentation.

Sounds boring, right? Good. That’s by design. The boring name is load-bearing. Below that are your interests. Golf. Heavy metal. Vintage motorcycles. True crime podcasts. The stuff that actually holds your attention when nobody’s telling you what to pay attention to. More durable than lifestyle. Takes a few months to shift meaningfully.

Below that are your opinions. What you think about taxes, immigration, the guy in the news everyone’s angry about. Opinions feel very personal and very firm right up until the moment they don’t. They’re opinion-flavored, which means they feel like convictions but move like weather. Give it a year of the right information environment and opinions will follow.

And at the bottom, at the foundation, are your values. Your actual values. What you would die for. What you would be ashamed to violate. What you pass to your children without realizing you’re doing it. Family. Security. Freedom. God. Justice. The permanent architecture of who you are.

Now here is the thing that the marketing textbooks mention almost apologetically, as a practical footnote, before moving on to the case studies about car advertising.

Values are the most stable layer. They are decade-scale in their permanence. They are the best predictors of where you are going to move in the future.

Read that again.

The people studying how to sell you things figured out that if you want to influence someone for a week, you target their lifestyle. If you want influence that lasts months, target their interests. Years — target their opinions.

But if you want to change someone in a way that persists, that propagates into everything they do, that reshapes their relationships and their politics and their perception of what is real and what is possible — you go for the values.

You go for the foundation.

And then there is this academic framework called the Schwartz theory of basic human values, which maps out the entire territory of human values on a circle — a circumplex, they call it — where adjacent values are compatible and values on opposite sides are in tension. Security and Conformity cluster together. Self-direction and Universalism sit near each other. Power and Achievement are neighbors. And on the other side of the circle, pulling against Security like a philosophical arm-wrestling match, you have Stimulation and Self-direction and Hedonism.

The marketing people use this to understand customers. The psychographic targeting operations use it as a targeting map. It tells you which buttons to push to move a person in a specific direction. It tells you which value tensions to exploit to destabilize someone who is currently stable. You want to push someone afraid of disorder toward authoritarianism? You amplify the Security values, you manufacture threats to the things they are wired to protect, and you watch the needle move. You want to push an idealist toward cynicism and atomization? You frame every institution as a betrayal of the Universalist values they hold most sacred until the idealism curdles into despair.

This is not persuasion in any meaningful sense of the word. You are not giving people new arguments. You are not engaging with their reasoning. You are playing a piano that someone else built and tuning it to play the note you want.

Now. Here is where it gets interesting.

Academic research confirmed in 2019 — through actual statistical hypothesis testing, in a proper peer-reviewed journal, not a self-published rant on the internet — that psychographic targeting doesn’t just change behavior temporarily. It creates attitudinal loyalty. And attitudinal loyalty, in the technical language, is defined as robustness against updating.

Robustness against updating.

Sit with that phrase for a moment. Let it fully land.

They have a clinical, academic, respectable term for the condition in which a person will encounter evidence that they are wrong and find a way to make the evidence wrong instead.

Brand loyalty, in the literature, is when you love your car company so much that when someone shows you a consumer safety report suggesting your car company cut corners on the airbags, you decide the report is biased rather than reconsider your relationship with the car company.

Apply this to something other than cars. Apply it to a political movement. Apply it to a media personality. Apply it to a worldview. Apply it to a story about who the enemy is and what they want.

Once the identity bond is constructed — and it can be constructed deliberately, with the right psychographic profile and the right content calibrated to the right value architecture — the bond becomes self-reinforcing. Every threat to it becomes evidence of the conspiracy rather than information to be processed. The person is not irrational. They are loyal. The loyalty was manufactured. But to them it feels like integrity.

The golf clubs, I promised you, were just the beginning.

PART TWO: THE MILITARY-GRADE ROOTS OF YOUR TOTALLY NORMAL FACEBOOK EXPERIENCE

Now we are going to talk about a company called SCL Group.

SCL Group stood up at an international arms fair in London in 2005 — a weapons trade show, the kind of event where you browse brochures for things that kill people in large quantities — and described itself as the first private company offering psychological warfare services to military and government clients.

The causality ran in the other direction. It took military psychological warfare methodology and applied it to democratic elections.

The mechanism worked like this.

A personality quiz app was deployed through Facebook’s API. You might have taken one. Millions of people did. They were mildly entertaining and completely free. The catch was that the app collected not just the data of the person who took the quiz, but the complete social graph data of everyone connected to that person — friends, family, acquaintances — who had never consented to anything.

Through this mechanism, the behavioral data of approximately 87 million people was harvested. Likes. Shares. Posts. Social connections. Content consumption patterns. All of it. From this behavioral residue, the OCEAN personality scores — Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, Neuroticism — were algorithmically inferred. From those scores, detailed psychographic profiles were constructed. From those profiles, specific psychological vulnerabilities were identified. From those vulnerabilities, precision-targeted messages were designed, tested, and deployed.

Each message was an instrument. Not an advertisement. An instrument.

The anxious person got fear. The orderly person got violation of order. The community-oriented person got the community under threat. The skeptical person got the heroic individual who saw through the corruption everyone else was too blind to recognize.

Not one of the 87 million people received these messages as targeting. They received them as content that finally understood them. Content that articulated what they had been feeling but couldn’t put into words. Content that felt, in the deep animal warmth of recognition, true.

A 2020 peer-reviewed paper analyzed the inquiry documents, the legal proceedings, the regulatory investigations, and Cambridge Analytica’s own internal revelations, and reached a conclusion in plain academic language: this met the formal criteria of psychological operations. Deceptive. Coercive. Non-consensual.

Psy-ops. Applied to voters. In democracies.

And here is the thing that makes it genuinely spectacular in its efficiency, as a piece of social engineering if not as a piece of human decency.

Cambridge Analytica did not build the infrastructure it used. The infrastructure was already there. Sitting in place. Already running on billions of people. Built not by a psychological warfare outfit, not by a foreign intelligence service, not by anyone with remotely sinister intentions — but by Silicon Valley companies trying to sell advertising.

The data collection mechanism: already built. The behavioral profiling framework: already built. The targeting delivery system: already built. The optimization loop that learns from each interaction and gets better: already built.

The only thing Cambridge Analytica brought to the party was intent.

And intent, it turns out, is the only missing ingredient required to convert the entire commercial infrastructure of the modern attention economy into the most comprehensive psychological warfare system ever pointed at a civilian population.

PART THREE: THE LOOP IS NOT A FILTER BUBBLE, IT IS A DIGESTION MACHINE

Let’s talk about the loop, because this is where the slow-motion horror becomes genuinely visible once you know what you’re looking at.

You have a platform. The platform has an algorithm. The algorithm has a metric — let’s say engagement, because it’s almost always engagement. Clicks, time spent, shares, comments, return visits. The algorithm is not learning about you.

Not after the first few weeks. Not really. It is learning about the person you are becoming under the conditions the algorithm is creating. The content it shows shapes your responses. Your responses are the data it uses to decide what to show next. The profile it builds from your responses is a profile of a person marinated in the content it selected. It is increasingly a portrait of its own output.

The algorithm is not studying a subject. It is manufacturing one, and then studying the product.

Research published in 2025 identified emotion as the key mechanism that makes this loop tighten over time rather than stabilize. Emotionally charged content — outrage, contempt, tribal pride, fear, the delicious hot righteous fury of people who are wrong on the internet — does two things at once. One who is easier to keep on the platform. One who has been helpfully pre-sorted into a psychographic category that advertisers, political operators, and foreign intelligence services can all use.

And the worst part? The psychographic profile built from this process — the one Cambridge Analytica bought, the one political micro-targeting firms buy, the one adversarial influence operators use to calibrate their cognitive warfare content — that profile is not a portrait of you. It is a portrait of you after years of algorithmic curation. It is a profile of the cage, not the bird.

And they use that profile to build a tighter cage.

The neuroscience adds the biological dimension to this, and it is not comfortable reading. The environment does not merely influence the brain. The brain is, in a meaningful technical sense, partially constituted by the environment it inhabits. Every rich, complex, varied, socially alive environment runs the prediction-error cycles that maintain the neural circuits responsible for complex cognition — planning, flexible thinking, the capacity to imagine that things could be different from how they are.

Impoverish the environment — whether physically, by building the kind of featureless, socially atomized urban zones that concentrated poverty produces, or informationally, by narrowing the information environment to a single emotional frequency of tribal grievance — and the circuits don’t fire. The capacities atrophy. The brain stops being built for a complex world because the complex world has been replaced with a managed simulation of one.

And then the stress response kicks in. Chronic cortisol. The sympathetic nervous system on low continuous burn. Which degrades precisely the prefrontal systems you would need to think your way out of the situation.

And then — and this is the part that should genuinely chill you — the epigenetic research shows that the modifications to stress-response gene expression caused by chronic environmental inadequacy can be transmitted to the next generation biologically. Not as metaphor. As molecular biology. The cognitive damage done to you by the environment you lived in gets passed to your children before they have taken a single breath in the world.

The pipeline is clean. You infer the psychographic profile from behavioral data. You feed it to the language model. The language model generates a bespoke persuasive message calibrated to the psychological architecture of that individual. You deploy it. You measure the behavioral response. You retrain the model. You run it again.

No human copywriter in the loop. No human strategist reviewing what gets sent. No human judgment anywhere between the psychographic score and the content that lands in someone’s feed or inbox or notifications.

And the infrastructure required to do this at population scale? It already exists. It is the same infrastructure running the attention economy right now. The gap between the demonstrated capability and deployment at scale is not technical. It is not a resource constraint. It is not a regulatory barrier that currently exists.

It is a decision. One decision. Made by someone you will never meet, in a meeting you will never know occurred.

PART FIVE: THE MATH THAT PROVES THE WHOLE THING IS TERMINAL

Now we arrive at the part of the show where things stop being merely disturbing and become formally, provably, mathematically inevitable.

In September 2025, two researchers at École Polytechnique submitted a paper to one of the flagship machine learning conferences. The paper was funded by the European Research Council. It was accepted at ICML 2025. It is called “The Strong, Weak and Benign Goodhart’s Law: An Independence-Free and Paradigm-Agnostic Formalisation.”

I want to be very clear about what kind of document this is. It is not an opinion. It is not a think-tank report. It is not a concerned academic making an argument that other academics can contest. It is a proof. In the mathematical sense. Given these axioms and these conditions, the following conclusions follow necessarily. You cannot debate a proof. You can check it for errors. In the Strong Goodhart case — here it is, here is the one — the expected value of the true goal decreases as the proxy metric is pushed harder. The more aggressively you optimize the metric, the worse the true goal gets. The dashboard goes up. The reality goes down. The harder you push the accelerator, the faster you drive into the wall.

And then the technical punchline.

Which of these four outcomes occurs depends on the tail behavior of the discrepancy. The discrepancy is the gap between the proxy metric and the true goal. When that gap has light tails — when extreme divergences between metric and reality are bounded, normal, Gaussian — the Goodhart effects are manageable. Uncomfortable. But survivable.

When the gap has heavy tails — when extreme divergences are possible, when the distribution of the gap follows a power law where catastrophic mismatches occur not as rare freakish events but as structural features of the distribution — the dynamics become catastrophic. And in the heavy-tailed case, the paper proves that over-optimization occurs at a rate inversely proportional to the heaviness of the tail. The heavier the tail, the faster and more completely the metric destroys the goal.

Social media engagement metrics are empirically power-law distributed. This is not controversial. A small number of pieces of content receive orders of magnitude more engagement than everything else. This is the textbook signature of a heavy-tailed distribution.

The gap between engagement and anything resembling a legitimate social good — informed citizens, shared epistemic reality, democratic capacity — is also heavy-tailed. Most of the time the gap is manageable. But when viral outrage erupts, when coordinated inauthentic behavior floods the zone, when the psychographic targeting machine finds the cognitive marginality window and delivers the right content to people whose belief architecture is destabilized and genuinely open — the gap becomes enormous. And in a heavy-tailed distribution, those enormous events are not statistical curiosities at the edge of the bell curve. They are the events that dominate the aggregate behavior of the entire system.

Conclusion: engagement-optimizing algorithms operate in the strong Goodhart regime. The harder and faster they optimize, the faster they drive cognitive health, epistemic quality, and democratic capacity toward their minimum values. Not as a side effect. As the necessary mathematical consequence of what they are doing and how the distributions are shaped.

And then the adversarial dimension, which is the part that transforms a problem into a catastrophe.

An adversary who understands that a target system is optimizing a proxy metric can deliberately engineer inputs that maximize the proxy while destroying the goal. Because the Goodhart gap exists, has known structural features, and can be mapped, modeled, and exploited. Russian information operations in Western democracies are not fighting the platforms. They are not trying to corrupt or disrupt the platforms. They are feeding the platforms. They produce content that is perfectly optimized for the engagement metric — fury, contempt, division, epistemic chaos — while ensuring that the thing the metric was presumably supposed to serve recedes as far as possible.

The platform runs its optimization as designed. The adversary provides the fuel. The platform provides the distribution. The population provides the brains being dissolved.

And the final impossibility result, which closes every door: it is mathematically impossible to construct a non-trivial proxy reward function that is completely immune to exploitation. This was proven in 2025. Any proxy that differs from the true goal in any non-trivial way — which is the entire point of having a proxy, because if the proxy perfectly captured the true goal you wouldn’t need one — can be hacked. Always. Without exception. By mathematical necessity.

There is no metric you can design that a sufficiently sophisticated adversary cannot eventually exploit to move your platform’s output in the direction of destroying the thing the metric was meant to serve.

The cage has no engineering exit. You cannot optimize your way out of the optimization problem.

PART SIX: WHAT IS ACTUALLY BEING LOST WHILE THE NUMBERS GO UP

Everything so far has been about machinery. Systems. Proofs. This part is about the actual human beings the machinery is running on.

The brain, according to Italian neurological research published in late 2025, is not a self-contained computing device that sits behind your eyes processing the world at arm’s length. It is a prediction machine that is partially constituted by the environment it inhabits. It learns to predict, and it learns to predict the specific environment it lives in, and it builds and maintains its predictive architecture through continuous engagement with that environment.

A rich environment — varied, complex, socially alive, aesthetically meaningful, physically navigable in ways that require and reward attention — is an environment that runs the brain’s prediction-error cycles constantly. Those cycles maintain and develop the neural circuits responsible for everything we consider distinctively human cognition: planning, flexible thinking, holding multiple possibilities in mind simultaneously, imagining that the future does not have to look like the past.

An impoverished environment — monotonous, degraded, socially atomized, or algorithmically curated to a single emotional frequency of tribal grievance — systematically fails to provide the signals those circuits require. They don’t fire. The capacities that depend on them atrophy.

This is true whether the impoverishment is physical — the kind of degraded peripheral urban environment that concentrated poverty produces, built by people optimizing for returns on real estate investment who externalized the neurological costs onto people with no political power to object — or informational. An information environment narrowed to a channel of continuous low-grade outrage and tribal validation is an impoverished environment in the same neurological sense as a featureless concrete housing project. Different inputs. Same failure to provide the cognitive nutrition a brain requires.

And then the stress response. Because the brain does not politely accept impoverishment. It interprets it as threat. Cortisol. Sympathetic nervous system activation. The fight-or-flight response, which is a superb system for dealing with acute predators and a catastrophic system for dealing with the sustained grinding experience of an environment that is simply inadequate to your needs. Chronic stress under these conditions degrades the prefrontal systems — the planning, the flexible thinking, the impulse control, the working memory — that you would require to reason your way out of the situation.

You are too stressed to think clearly. About the things making you stressed. That is not an accident.

And then the military noticed — the French Army published material on this in early 2026, the NATO Secretary-General’s office made it official doctrine in December 2025 — that manufactured uncertainty is itself a weapon. The deliberate flooding of information channels with contradictory, destabilizing content is not a tactic for making people believe specific false things. Democracy does not function on correct information. It functions on the felt willingness to act together. That feeling is the actual operational target. Engineer contempt for institutions. Engineer despair about collective action. Engineer the gut-level conviction that everything is corrupt, everyone is lying, no movement is real, no leader is genuine, no system can be changed — and you can leave every institution technically standing. You can leave the voting booths open and the newspapers running and the courts in session. None of it works. The machinery runs. The ignition is dead.

And the psychographic loop ensures the feeling is self-sustaining once seeded. The cynical person engages with cynicism-confirming content. The algorithm delivers more of it. The profile deepens. The feeling intensifies. The capacity for the felt sense of shared fate — the one thing democracy actually runs on — is eaten, incrementally, by the loop that was built to maximize time-spent.

PART SEVEN: THE SEVEN LAYERS AND THE BEAUTIFUL, TERRIBLE ABSENCE OF ANYONE TO BLAME

Here is the complete picture.

Layer one: a neutral marketing framework for understanding customers. Lifestyle, interests, opinions, values. Used since the 1930s to sell products. Total annual market for psychographic research: billions of dollars. Nothing illegal. Broadly respected. In the textbooks.

Layer two: peer-reviewed confirmation that psychographic targeting produces not just behavioral change but attitudinal loyalty — the formal, academic, respectably published condition of being resistant to evidence that you are wrong.

Layer three: an arms-fair company that described itself as offering psychological warfare services turns out to be the parent company of the data analytics firm that ran psychographic targeting operations on democratic elections using harvested data from 87 million people. Formally classified in peer-reviewed literature as psy-ops meeting the criteria of deception, coercion, and non-consent.

Layer four: an algorithmic feedback loop running on the same commercial infrastructure that, left to its own optimization dynamics, progressively consumes and replaces the genuine psychological identity of its users with a more algorithmically convenient artifact, which is then used for further targeting of the artifact it produced.

Now the beautiful part, the part that lets everyone sleep at night.

Nobody did this.

Nobody in any of these systems made a decision to build a population-scale cognition-degradation machine. The attention economy optimizes for engagement because engagement is measurable and monetizable. The Goodhart dynamics did the rest. Nobody decided the optimal outcome was a tribalized, epistemically fragmented population swimming in cortisol. That outcome is a mathematical consequence of optimizing the metric in a heavy-tailed environment. Nobody intended it. The market did it.

The property developers and zoning boards did not convene to design heritable neurological damage into low-income housing. They optimized returns. The neurological externalities landed on people who had no means to demand compensation.

The educational institutions did not gather to explicitly decide that neurodivergent cognition would be systematically excluded from knowledge production. They built systems around the cognitive style of the people building the systems, assumed it was universal, and let the epistemic marginalization follow automatically.

The adversarial state actors did not build the infrastructure. They just recognized that the infrastructure the West built for commercial reasons was the most efficient cognitive warfare platform in human history, already deployed, already running, and requiring only content to operate.

So who do you blame? The market? The metrics? The optimization function that has no concept of what it is destroying?

You can’t put metrics in handcuffs.

You can’t indict an incentive structure.

You can’t put a proxy reward function on trial.

And through all of it — through the loop tightening and the profiles deepening and the cognitive capacities atrophying and the epigenetic damage passing to the next generation — the narrative stays perfectly consistent. If you can’t keep up, if you’re confused, if you feel like something fundamental has been taken from you that you cannot quite name or locate — that is a personal failing. Resilience deficit. Digital literacy gap. Insufficient emotional intelligence. You should download an app. You should meditate. You should consume content about consuming content more healthily.

They built the cage. They convinced you the feeling of flying was freedom. They are selling you lessons on how to fly better.

PART EIGHT: WHAT THE MATH SAYS ABOUT THE DOOR

The mathematics closes most of the doors. Let me be honest about that before I mention the ones it leaves open.

Fact-checking doesn’t work on identity-level beliefs. Not because people are stupid. Because identity-level narratives are not falsifiable by fact. The person who believes the election was stolen is not holding a factual belief that can be corrected with evidence. They are holding an identity commitment that is structured to be robust against the kind of evidence you would use to falsify it. The psychographic loyalty research confirmed this in dry academic language a decade ago. You cannot debunk an identity. You can only construct a different identity, and even that takes years and the right conditions.

What does work — and this is not hope, this is inoculation theory, which is peer-reviewed and reproducible — is pre-bunking. Not correcting the false claim after it lands. Exposing people to weakened versions of the manipulation technique before it is deployed. Showing them the mechanism. Explaining explicitly how the psychological exploitation works. When you name the technique before someone uses it on you, you activate a resistance that survives the full deployment of the technique.

You cannot inoculate a population against a specific lie. You can inoculate it against the category of psychological move the lie uses.

The Majka/El-Mhamdi paper points toward metric aggregation as a partial technical hedge. Combining multiple proxy metrics carefully to reduce variance, making individual metric exploitation less leverageable. Not a solution. A partial mitigation. The impossibility result means no aggregation strategy fully resolves the underlying problem. But you can raise the cost. You can slow the process.

The deeper answer the mathematics leaves open is institutional. Not technical. Institutional.

Platform regulation that treats engagement optimization as a public health matter with actual legal teeth. Not guidelines. Not industry self-regulation. The same categorical seriousness we apply to air quality, to food safety, to pharmaceutical advertising. This is not a free speech question. Nobody has the right to optimize population-scale cognitive degradation and call it a service.

Urban design standards that treat cognitive affordance richness as a building code requirement. Not an amenity. Not something you do in expensive neighborhoods because the residents can afford to demand it. A biological necessity that planning and building codes must ensure everywhere, for everyone, because the neurological consequences of deprivation are documented, are heritable, and are being paid by people who had no vote in the matter.

Education that teaches metacognitive resilience as a core subject. Not an elective. Not a digital literacy module in the sixth grade. The capacity to observe your own cognitive processes, recognize the conditions under which your judgment degrades, and understand the specific mechanisms by which information environments exploit those conditions. As fundamental as reading. Because in the world that exists now, it is more important than reading.

And the hardest one: cognitive defense that does not require becoming what it defends against. Adversaries manipulate without ethical constraint. Democratic responses must respect cognitive autonomy, transparency, and the prohibition on non-consensual psychological manipulation. These constraints are not the vulnerability. They are the values being defended. Abandoning them to win is not winning. It is surrendering the thing that made the fight worth having.

EPILOGUE: THEY BUILT IT ON PURPOSE ACCIDENTALY AND THAT IS THE WORST PART

Here is the final thought. The one that keeps the light on.

The cage was not built by villains in a room. That would be simpler. That would at least give you a villain. Villains can be prosecuted. Villains can be removed. Villains have faces and addresses and lawyers who will eventually run out of continuances.

The cage was built by the market. By incentives. By the clean, automatic, perfectly legal logic of optimizing measurable things and externalizing unmeasurable costs onto people who cannot prevent it.

The market built an engagement optimization machine because engagement was measurable and monetizable.

The Goodhart dynamics turned that machine into a cognition-degradation engine because the math required it to.

The adversaries found the cognition-degradation engine already running and pointed it more deliberately in the direction it was already going.

And the proof — the ERC-funded, ICML-accepted, mathematically rigorous proof — established that you cannot solve this from inside the optimization problem. You cannot make a better metric. You cannot engineer your way to a proxy that serves the true goal while also being impossible to exploit. The impossibility is formal. It is in the theorem.

The only exit is above the objective function. Institutional. Regulatory. Cultural. The constraints have to be placed above the optimization loop, not inside it.

And developing the collective will to place those constraints — demanding them, building the political coherence to enforce them, sustaining the solidarity and shared sense of fate that democratic governance actually requires to function — depends on exactly the cognitive capacity and felt sense of shared purpose that the system is optimizing, provably and by mathematical necessity, to destroy.

That’s the game. That’s the whole game.

The clock is running.

The question is whether you feel more like someone this is happening to, or someone who is going to do something about it.

Because at some point, those stop being two different moods and become two different futures.

And the window between them is not getting wider.
