Block by block: Unlocking the power of building blocks

I find myself frequently drawn back to the simplicity and creativity of my childhood. Growing up, I was fond of colourful toys; little did I know they were tools to explore and unleash my creativity. Red, yellow, blue and green were the most vibrant colours that would stimulate our minds. The toys that monopolised this attribute were the building blocks we used as kids.

Among the many memories that stand out, one in particular never fails to bring a smile to my face — the countless hours spent playing with building blocks. The blocks we all would have used to build the first house of our lives, sometimes our first train or car, either way, we have consistently built something with it. Was our day building those things just fun? Or did that hold a much more significant meaning? And the answer is yes, it is more than fun.

Space Explorers

Block by block, we built our dreams. A castle here, a spaceship there, and sometimes, a sprawling cityscape that covered the entire living room floor. Each piece was a story, a symbol of our boundless imagination. The joy of seeing our ideas take shape, one block at a time, was unparalleled.

These building blocks were not just fun but were our first teachers. They taught us shapes, sizes and colours. They were the first to show us the world of geometric shapes, symmetry, and balance. It also showed us that having a solid foundation was crucial and that perseverance and patience can make our wildest dreams a reality.

Problem Solving Guides

When our block tower crashed, it was not the time for us to be sad. It was a thrilling mystery for us to solve! Like detectives, we had to figure out what went wrong and how we would fix it. This was the start of our journey as problem solvers. This skill would be helpful throughout our lives and is essential to survive on this dubious planet.

As we grew older, the blocks were replaced with textbooks, the castles with equations, and the spaceships with theories. But the lessons we learned from those blocks remained. They shaped our thinking, guided our decisions, and influenced our approach to problem-solving.

Our ‘Motor Mentor’

While playing with these blocks as infants, we would reach, grasp and stack the blocks. This developed our motor skills and hand-eye coordination. It stimulated senses that we generally don’t give much attention to, such as the touch and feel of things. We could give life to our imaginations by building it by hand.

Building Bonds

Remember times when you built a castle with a friend or sibling? It is a cherished memory that you still hold on to. The idea behind a community started here; blocks were not only meant for solo play. We learn to work as a team when we share our blocks and build something with friends. We learn to share our ideas, cooperate with others, and even resolve disagreements in a friendly way.

The sense of achievement we attain after building something that we could only imagine until now is something we still yearn for in our adult life. That is the dream that we are all striving for.

Today, as we navigate the complexities of adulthood, we often find ourselves applying these lessons. When faced with a challenge, we start by laying a solid foundation, just like building a block castle. We approach problems patiently, piece by piece, confident that with time and effort, the solution will take shape. In retrospect, building blocks were more than just a childhood pastime. They were a metaphor for life. Just as we build structures block by block, we build our lives experience by experience. Each block, each experience, is a stepping stone, a building block towards the person we become.
