THE SEED OF THE SACRED FIG (2024)

A must-watch for any secular nation transitioning to an Islamic state. Director Mohammad Rasoulof made this powerful tale of conscience and conflict while evading Iran’s oppressive regime. You get the sense Iran is blinking her eyes to the free world in Morse code.

In the preamble, Rasoulouf describes the “Ficus Religiosa (Sacred Fig) as a tree with an unusual life cycle. Its seeds, contained in bird droppings, fall on other trees. Aerial roots spring up and grow down to the floor. Then, the branches wrap around the host tree and strangle it. Finally, the Sacred Fig stands on its own.”

To digress from the story, the preamble itself is a perfect allegory of Iran’s evolution from a monarchy to an Islamic Republic.

1. The seeds in bird droppings represent how revolutionary Islamic ideas were initially carried and spread among the population, taking root in social structures and institutions during the Shah’s reign.

2. The aerial roots growing downward parallel how the revolution established grassroots connections across Iranian society through mosques, bazaars, universities, and the community.

3. The gradual strangling of the host tree mirrors how the Islamic revolutionary forces systematically encircled and dismantled the Pahlavi monarchy’s power structures by (a) taking control of key institutions, (b) replacing secular laws with Islamic jurisprudence, © transforming social and cultural norms, and (d) gradually constricting opposing political movements.

4. The final stage is where the Sacred Fig stands alone. This represents how the Islamic Republic emerged dominant after swallowing its former “host,” the monarchical and secular institutions.

Rasoulof uses the metaphor in the preamble to capture the revolutionary’s organic yet parasitic nature, where one system grew within another before completely supplanting it.

It also suggests the patience and inevitability of the transformation, as natural as a tree’s growth but fundamentally destructive of what came before.
