Sunil Gavaskar Graces Kasaragod: A Moment with the Cricketing Icon
Some days bring unexpected joy, and this was one of them. I was flipping through the newspaper when a headline caught my eye — “Cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar to visit Kasaragod; road to be named in his honour.”
As a cricket fan, I couldn’t resist the opportunity to see him.
In the peaceful district of Kasaragod, Kerala, an extraordinary moment was unfolding. The local municipality had made a remarkable decision to rename the Kasaragod Municipal Stadium Road to Sunil Gavaskar Municipal Stadium Road, in tribute to one of India’s cricketing legends. As the crowd gathered, there was a palpable sense of excitement in the air — Sunil Gavaskar, the man himself, had flown in all the way from Dubai after commentating on the India vs Bangladesh ICC Champions Trophy 2025 match. His presence added an extra layer of magic to this historic occasion.
This wasn’t the first time a road in Kasaragod had been named after a cricketer. Back in 2010, the legendary leg-spinner Anil Kumble had inaugurated a road named after him in Kumbla Grama Panchayat, a village with deep ties to his ancestry. But this time, it was Gavaskar’s moment.

Sunil Gavaskar — The Cricketing Icon
The Little Master, as he is fondly called, redefined batting in an era when fast bowling dominated world cricket. Making his debut in 1971 against the West Indies, he stunned the world with 774 runs in his debut series — a record that still stands. He was also a part of India’s historic 1983 World Cup-winning squad, a moment that changed Indian cricket forever.
Throughout his career, Gavaskar was known for his impeccable technique and fearless batting against some of the most fearsome bowlers in history, including the legendary West Indian pacers. He was the first batsman to score 10,000 runs in Test cricket and set numerous records that inspired generations of cricketers.
After retiring, he became a respected cricket analyst and commentator, continuing to influence the game with his insights and sharp analysis. Even today, his words carry weight in the cricketing world.

Witnessing the Legend
On the sunny afternoon of February 21, I took a bus to Kasaragod to witness this historic occasion. The event was scheduled for 3:30 PM, but I reached around 4:00 PM, joining a sea of cricket fans eagerly waiting to see their idol. The atmosphere was electrifying, with drums beating, cheers echoing, and excitement in the air.
When Gavaskar finally arrived, he was welcomed with a grand procession. I was lucky enough to join the jeep rally led by Sunil Gavaskar himself. Walking alongside him, surrounded by passionate fans, was a moment I will never forget. I may have never seen him play live, but witnessing his legacy being honored in person was truly special.

A Moment of Gratitude
As he addressed the crowd, his words carried genuine emotion. One statement, in particular, stood out:
“I am from Mumbai, and there isn’t even a road named after me there. But here in Kasaragod, you have given me this incredible honour. I am deeply grateful and happy. It has been years since I stopped playing, yet you still remember my career. That means the world to me.”
The audience erupted in applause. It was a proud moment, not just for Kasaragod but for all Keralites. Hearing those words from one of India’s greatest cricketers gave me goosebumps. It was a reminder of how deeply cricket is loved in India — a sport that creates bonds that last beyond generations.
Adding to the joy of the day, Kerala’s Ranji team had just reached the finals, making Gavaskar’s presence even more special. It was a celebration of cricket, history, and deep respect for a legend. He also expressed his joy over Kerala’s achievement, sharing in the excitement of the team’s success.
As I stood there among the cheering crowd, I knew this was a moment I would cherish forever — a day when cricket, nostalgia, and admiration came together in the heart of Kasaragod.

A Day to Remember
As the event came to an end, I found myself standing still, taking it all in. Meeting Sunil Gavaskar had been a dream I never thought would come true. Walking in the procession with him, witnessing the love and admiration he received, and being part of such a historic moment — it was all overwhelmingly beautiful.
As I made my way back home, I realized why cricket is more than just a sport in India. It brings people together, creates memories, and leaves a lasting impact. That day, I didn’t just see a legend — I experienced the love, respect, and passion that cricket brings into our lives.
