How to sleep? Or How to sleep better?
A few years ago I started to spend a lot of time on social media because of all the craze it has and I also got trapped in it because of my age at that point of time- I was a teenager then.
Apart from all the bad effects of social media, “Deterioration of Sleep” or “Disturbance in Sleep Cycles” are still the most popular and disturbing ones. Nighttime is the most popular in the field of social media because most 15–25 yrs old don’t sleep the way they should, and spend the nights scrolling through the feeds and watching videos.
Being a Psychology Graduate, I studied the biological aspects of brain with respect to the psychological ones. And came to the realisation that social media is very addictive and the addiction of mobile phone or any other gadget is very bad for the health too.
As we all must have studied but paid very less attention to the Endocrine system of Human body. We neglect the very basic bodily functioning such as the secretion of different hormones and their importance.
One of the major Hormone/Neurotransmitter is MELATONIN which is basically a sleep hormone and is secreted by Pineal Gland and is released in response to the dark which basically means when our brain detects darkness it secrets the Melatonin in order to keep our Circadian Rhythm/Sleep-Wake Cycle.
Due to prolonged access to the bright light by a smartphone or laptop our brain gets confused whether its night or day time. And the time of releasing the hormone gets disturbed leading to the disturbed Circadian Rhythm.
When Circadian Rhythm/sleep-wake cycle of body gets disturbed, we can’t sleep on time which leads to sleeplessness, anxiety symptoms, and an overall unease in daily routine. When I reached at this stage, I started researching on the ways to better sleep. I tried meditation, psychological tricks, even self-hypnosis. I came to the realisation that we can give suggestions to our brain/mind the way we give suggestions to other people. IT LISTENS TO US. We have to believe that it listens to us otherwise it won’t. What I started doing is to Turn-off all the gadgets 1/2 an hour before bed and keep the room dark completely. Then taking 10–15 deep breaths and giving suggestions to my mind that the parts of my body has started to relax and I am going to sleep.
I would whisper to myself-
•My legs are getting relaxed, they are getting relaxed. (I would feel like I can’t move them because they are so loose and relaxed)
•My thighs are relaxed, then stomach, then the chest and so on.
I wouldn’t even realise that It made me actually sleep. I would wake up the next morning in the very same position which I was laying in bed. And mostly I wouldn’t have dreams about anything.
This kind of sleep was so effective that I would feel double energetic the next day and more importantly I would feel more close to myself and in control of my mind. Its not just a technique of sleeping, its Meditation.
Try it for three days and you won’t leave it…
