Royal Mail Unveils Historic New Delivery Target: Eventually
Second class, second thoughts: Royal Mail has missed its delivery targets for the sixth year running, with only 75.7 percent of first-class post arriving the next working day, comfortably short of the target and, more importantly, of most people’s patience.
The company insists it is “putting significant investment into improving reliability,” which longtime customers note is roughly the same sentence it has been saying since before some of its undelivered letters were even written.
Regulator Lowers the Target Rather Than Watch the Company Miss It Again
Bar lowered, letters still not raised: Ofcom has quietly reduced Royal Mail’s official delivery targets from 93 percent to 90 percent for first-class post, a manoeuvre widely recognised as the regulatory equivalent of moving the finish line closer because the runner kept tripping.
“We haven’t lowered our standards,” insisted one Royal Mail spokesperson. “We’ve simply recalibrated what ‘standard’ means.”
Second-Class Post Now Delivered on Alternate Weekdays, Which Sounds Like a Riddle
Every other day, every other excuse: under a new delivery model, second-class letters will arrive on alternate weekdays only, a change the company says reflects modern usage patterns and critics say reflects modern delivery capacity.
Birmingham comedian Baljit Sandhu addressed the change on stage. “They’ve told me my second-class post now comes every other day. Brilliant. So has my will to keep sending birthday cards.”
£500 Million Investment Announced, Results Still Pending
Stamp of disapproval: Royal Mail has pledged half a billion pounds over five years to fix its delivery performance, a sum the company is confident will turn things around, roughly a year after it said the same thing about the previous investment.
Ofcom Opens Fresh Investigation as Fine Tally Continues to Climb
Return to sender, return of the fine: the regulator has fined Royal Mail three years running, with the most recent penalty reaching £21 million, and is now weighing a fresh investigation into this year’s performance, suggesting the fines have become less a deterrent and more a subscription service.

Royal Mail has genuinely committed £500 million to a five-year improvement plan, and its most recent monthly figures do show first-class delivery climbing back above 80 percent; the regulator’s patience, however, is wearing thin after six consecutive years of missed targets, and Ofcom’s decision to lower the bar rather than see it cleared says as much about expectations management as it does about actual improvement.

Auf Wiedersehen, amigo!
This satirical article is entirely fictional and intended as light political humor inspired by public discussion of Royal Mail’s delivery performance. Any resemblance of named comedic commentary to real individuals is coincidental; quoted figures are fictional characters. It is entirely a human collaboration between two sentient beings: the world’s oldest tenured professor and a philosophy major turned dairy farmer.
