A Future I Knew by Heart
On the strange grief of an unlived life…

By Author
For months, it lived ahead of me, quiet as a distant shore. I knew its shape before my feet had ever touched its soil.
In idle hours, I wandered there. I learned the names of unseen streets. A foreign sky had found its place among my ordinary days.
The dream grew real in little ways. A photograph. A weather report. A passing thought at work that said, Perhaps next year, this will be home.
One interview stood at the gate. A handful of questions. A few uncertain answers. An hour no longer than any other.
Evening arrived as evenings do. The city carried on unchanged. The tea grew cold beside my hand. The ceiling knew my silence well.
A weather forecast waited there for a city far from mine. I checked it out of habit, then remembered why I shouldn't.
I mourn the life I had already visited so many times in the hope that it began to feel remembered.
The map remains upon the wall. The dream remains where it was. Only the road has disappeared, and I am standing where it ended.
**Author’s Note: **The interview lasted less than an hour. The dream of Germany had been living with me for much longer.
