The Difference Between HMPV and Influenza A Viruses Outbreaking in China.

After the COVID-19 pandemic, China is facing an outbreak of new viruses. These are human metapneumovirus (HMPV) and Influenza A, commonly known as bird flu.

HMPV

HMPV exhibits flu-like symptoms and can also manifest symptoms similar to COVID-19. Health officials are closely monitoring the situation as the virus spreads.

Influenza A

The Influenza A strain currently affecting China is of the H1N1 and H9N2 sub-types. While bird flu isn’t a new virus, it’s a seasonal virus that has caused outbreaks and global concerns in the past.

HMPV Symptoms and Spread

According to The Nation, HMPV is similar to the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), which primarily affects children under two years old, though HMPV tends to infect older children. Symptoms include cough, fever, stuffy nose, and wheezing. Severe cases can lead to bronchitis or pneumonia, especially in infants, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.

Influenza A H1N1 Symptoms

Dr. Li Tongzeng from Beijing YouAn Hospital’s infectious disease department explained that Influenza A symptoms include dizziness, headache, fatigue, and general muscle aches. Flu can self-resolve for people with normal immune systems, usually within 5–7 days. Antiviral medications taken within 48 hours of symptom onset can be beneficial, shortening the illness, reducing severe complications, and lowering the risk of transmission.

Outbreak in China

A surge in acute respiratory infections has been reported in China, including an increase in HMPV infections. Approximately 40 flu-like outbreaks occurred between December 2–8, 2024, primarily in northern and southern provinces.

Prevention

To curb the spread of HMPV and other respiratory illnesses, health authorities recommend wearing masks in crowded places, maintaining social distancing, frequent hand washing, and avoiding crowded areas. Additionally, maintaining good hygiene, ensuring proper ventilation indoors, and adopting a healthy lifestyle are advised.

In essence, both HMPV and Influenza A are causing respiratory illnesses in China, with symptoms similar to the common cold and flu. Health authorities are closely monitoring the situation and urging the public to take preventive measures.
