Teen Anxiety Isn’t Always Obvious — Here Are the Signs I Missed

I used to think anxiety looked like panic attacks.

It doesn’t. Not in teenagers.

Sometimes it looks like: rechecking small things over and over.

“Are you sure I don’t need my laptop tomorrow?”

Physical complaints that disappear on weekends. Headaches. Stomach pain.

“I just don’t feel good.”

Avoiding anything that makes them visible. Living without clubs, without speaking up, and without ever asking for help.

And nights that never really settle. Too much thinking. Too much staring at the ceiling.

At first, it looks like inconsistency. But it’s not.

It’s a nervous system stuck in “what if” mode. And here’s what I had to learn the hard way:

Anxiety in teens is rarely about the situation.

It’s about prediction. Their brain is trying to prevent imagined failure.

Once I saw that, I stopped asking: “What’s wrong with you?”

And started asking: “What is your brain trying to protect you from?”

In the next part, I’ll show the first tool that actually helped in real moments of panic — not theory, but what to say when your child is already overwhelmed.
