What the hell did I just watch?

I went into Monkey’s Magic Merry Go Round expecting something fun, creepy, and maybe a little nostalgic.

Instead, I sat through an absolute fever dream nightmare that makes bizarre indie films like Lo and Abruptio look like completely normal, mainstream cinema.

I’m not even entirely sure this movie actually exists, or if I just had a really vivid, unsettling nightmare.

It is one of the most effective horror films I’ve seen in a long time — but I absolutely hated sitting through it.

Honestly, this movie is pure, unadulterated hell. It completely achieves exactly what it is going for, creating an atmosphere that is so deeply disturbing and uncomfortable that it feels almost sickening.

It’s not a bad movie at all — in fact, it’s pretty well-made — but it is an absolute test of endurance. It uses a creepy kid’s-show aesthetic to tell a dark story about trauma, and unless you are a literal glutton for punishment, I can’t recommend it.

The Setup: Dollar General Mr. Rogers

The movie opens on a weird, eerily empty set that looks like a twisted version of Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood.

A host named Mr. Jensen starts singing a kids’ song, and the vibe is instantly, overwhelmingly wrong.

He comes off as creepy right from the start, delivering lines like, ”I am fond of things that come in plastic bags.”

Mr. Jensen… please stop.

The entire production design taps directly into liminal horror — the same exact empty, nostalgic, and dead-inside feeling you get from Five Nights at Freddy’s. The lime-green door, the bizarre camera angles, and the unnatural emptiness of the set make you want to crawl out of your own skin within the first five minutes.

Then we meet the puppets, including a character named “Monkey.”

Monkey is very clearly just a guy in a suit with human hands, and I am almost positive this monkey smokes crack.

The puppets start singing, and the sheer cringe and discomfort of the situation makes you want to turn the TV off immediately.

The Descent Into Madness

The real plot kicks in when Mr. Jensen slowly realizes something dark is going on: he has absolutely no memories of his past.

The puppets seem highly suspicious of where his memories went, and things get progressively more unhinged. Monkey casually chugs a bottle of whiskey and starts a fire on set, and Mr. Jensen randomly turns his own knee into a puppet to perform magic tricks. It is completely bizarre.

As Mr. Jensen tries to piece his life together, the show drops clues about a deeply traumatic childhood, involving a house fire and an incredibly toxic family dynamic.

The horror shifts from psychological discomfort to full-on, visceral gore. Characters start sustaining horrific injuries, and the physical special effects look remarkably good.

Before long, the colorful kids’ show aesthetic completely rots. The set starts breaking down, and the puppets reveal a much more malicious, terrifying agenda. They begin trying to manipulate Mr. Jensen into harming himself, using twisted children’s show logic like, “The early bird gets the worm… as in, buried with the worms.”

Tension vs. Pure Uncomfortability

The tension in this movie doesn’t come from traditional scares. It comes from a total, unrelenting assault on your comfort zone.

The final stretch of the movie goes completely off the walls, culminating in an incredibly intense, gory sequence involving a merry-go-round, a plastic bag, and some top-tier special effects that are genuinely tough to stomach.

It transitions into a brutal struggle for survival as Mr. Jensen is forced to directly confront the reality of his childhood trauma and finally come to terms with his past.

What Stands Out

• Originality: There is absolutely nothing else like this out there.
• The Atmosphere: The team behind this deserves massive recognition for how perfectly they nailed the liminal, unsettling kids’-show aesthetic. It forces you to feel deep discomfort from frame one.
• The Gore: When the practical effects and gore finally hit, they hit hard. The final sequence is incredibly well-done and highly creative.

What Holds It Back

• The Suffering: It is just a miserable experience to sit through. The constant singing, the creepy dialogue, and the sickening vibe mean it has virtually zero rewatch value.
• The Pacing: Because it relies so heavily on making the audience cringe and feel uncomfortable, some scenes feel like they stretch on for an eternity.

Final Verdict

Monkey’s Magic Merry Go Round is honestly an achievement in indie horror, even if I hated every single second of it.

It is deeply unsettling, effective, and handles heavy themes of trauma in a way that is profoundly disturbing.

It completely accomplished what it set out to do, which makes it a good movie — even if the entertainment value is practically non-existent.

If you want to experience the weirdest, most uncomfortable fever dream of the year, give it a watch. Just don’t say I didn’t warn you.
