Right-hander Griffin Canning was very impressive in his Padres debut Sunday.

The starting pitcher, who suffered a season-ending Achilles tendon tear last season, allowed one run on 3 hits and 3 walks with seven strikeouts in five innings against the Chicago White Sox at Petco Park.

In addition to the five starters in the Padres’ current rotation, the Padres have three other starting pitchers on the injured list — Joe Musgrove, Nick Pivetta and Germán Márquez — plus Lucas Giolito, who is on an option after being signed late to a minor league contract.

PAD BITS:

— DH Miguel Andujar extended his hitting streak to eight straight games with his home run Sunday. He is 10-for-31 during the streak with two doubles, his two home runs as a Padre, seven RBIs, a walk and three runs for a .323 batting average, a .344 on-base percentage and a .581 slugging percentage for a .924 OPS.

— 1B Ty France has four, two-hit games in his last six starts, going 8-for-25 with a double, a triple, 2 home runs, 7 RBIs and 4 runs for a .320/.346/.680/1.026 slash line.

PADRES HISTORY:

May 4, 1977 — The Padres and Phillies complete a nine-inning game at San Diego Stadium in a franchise-record one hour and 29 minutes. The secret to the quickest game in Padres history are the fast-working pitchers, Randy Jones and Jim Kaat of the Phillies. Jones allowed one run on four hits and a walk in a complete-game as the Padres won 4–1. Left fielder Gene Richards was 2-for-5 with a homer and three RBIs.

RF-LF Tirso Ornelas (.211), the Padres’ №25 prospect, had a double and a home run in 3 at-bats with 3 RBIs and 2 walks for Double-A San Antonio. CF-RF Braedon Karpathios (.209), the №11 prospect, was 2-for-5 with a RBI and a run. 1B Romeo Sanabria (.183), the №28 prospect, was 2-for-3 with a walk, a hit-by-pitch, a steal and a run. C Ethan Salas, the №2 prospect, was 0-for-2 with 2 walks, a steal and 2 runs.

SS Jorge Quintana (.210), the Padres’ №6 prospect, was 2-for-4 with a double, 2 RBIs, 2 walks, a stolen base and 3 runs scored for Single-A Lake Elsinore. 1B Truitt Madonna (.253), the №23 prospect, was 3-for-6.

2B Sung-Mun Song (.293) hit his first home run in America, a solo shot in 4 at-bats for Triple-A El Paso. RHP Garrett Hawkins (6.94), the Padres’ №13 prospect, allowed a hit with a strikeout in 1 1/3 scoreless innings. RHP David Morgan gave up a run on 2 hits and 2 walks with 2 strikeouts in an inning in his first game since being optioned to the Chihuahuas from the Padres to suffer the loss.

MINOR LEAGUES:

TRIPLE-A EL PASO (15–18) — ALBUQUERQUE 4, Chihuahuas 3: Starting LHP Jackson Wolf (4.88) gave up 3 runs on 5 hits and 2 walks with a strikeout in 4 2/3 innings.

DOUBLE-A SAN ANTONIO (7–20) — Missions 8, TULSA 7: DH Leandro Cedeño (.345) was 2-for-5 with a 3-run home run. Starting RHP Eric Yost (3.27) gave up a run on no hits, 3 walks and 2 hit batters with 7 strikeouts in 4 innings. RHP Yohan Moreno (1–0, 1.15) issued a walk with 4 strikeouts in 2 1/3 hitless innings to earn the win.

HIGH SINGLE-A FORT WAYNE (12–15) — TinCaps 11, SOUTH BEND 10: RF Jake Cunningham (.325) had a double and a home run with 2 RBIs, a walk and 2 runs. 2B Rosman Verdugo (.247) was 2-for-4 with a 2-run home run and a walk. C Carlos E. Rodriguez (.213) was 2-for-4 with a 3-run home run, a walk and 2 runs. LHP Igor Gil (2–0, 2.19) had 3 strikeouts in 3 perfect innings to earn the win. RHP Clay Edmondson (0.75) allowed a hit with 2 Ks in a scoreless IP to earn his fifth save.

SINGLE-A LAKE ELSINORE (17–10) — Storm 12, ONTARIO 10 (10 innings): LF Qrey Lott (.400) was 5-for-5 with 2 home runs and 6 RBIs. DH Luke Cantwell (.352) was 4-for-5 with a double, a RBI and 2 runs. RF George Bilecki (.220) was 3-for-6 with 2 RBIs, a steal and 2 runs. 2B-LF Justin DeCriscio (.322) had a solo home run in 6 at-bats with 2 runs.
