Let’s Get to Know Some Stamps

Window into significant facets of other countries, Part 9

Recently, I revived my stamp collection hobby (philately). So, let me share some stamps and talk about them. It’s Part 9.

This is a Poland stamp shows Phoenician merchant ship; 15th century B.C. Phoenicians were among the greatest seafaring traders of the ancient Mediterranean. They transported goods like pottery, glass, textiles, metals, timber, and the famous Tyrian purple dye.

The stamp is issued by Taiwan (Republic of China) as part of Taiwan’s annual Lunar New Year zodiac stamp series to celebrate the Year of the Monkey. The Chinese character in the background reads hóu, meaning monkey.

USA stamp showing Paul Laurence Dunbar. I leaned he was a USA poet who wrote in English and African American dialect, helping bring Black voices into mainstream American literature. One of his works was Sympathy (“I know why the caged bird sings…”). That’s the memoir name of famous writer Maya Angelou. She got inspiration from Dunbar’s work.

This U.S. stamp, issued in 1988, features the Ring-necked Pheasant. It portrays the colorful male bird with its iridescent green head, white neck ring, and long barred tail against an autumn landscape.

This Canadian stamp, issued in 1992, celebrates support for the Canadian Olympic Team. It features the Canadian flag, the Olympic rings, and a mountain landscape in the background.

This U.S. stamp, also issued in 1988, features the Northern Spotted Owl perched on a conifer branch. The species is native to the old-growth forests of the Pacific Northwest.

This USA stamp honors Margaret Chase Smith, the first woman to serve in both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate, representing Maine. She is especially remembered for her 1950 “Declaration of Conscience” speech, in which she spoke out against fear-based political tactics during the McCarthy era.
