We Left In The Rain

We left in the rain.
We left in spite of the rain.
So heavy was our haste, we did not feel the pelts against our skin,
Did not notice the whipping of the wind,
Did not hear the bark of thunder,
Did not taste the chill that fell.
We left in the rain.
We left afraid.
No package was considered dear, as we left possessions behind,
We carried only ourselves, we could not carry our tears.
Hopeful that every step we took,
Would take us closer to the new.
We had tried and failed,
We were beaten and reduced.
The constant fear of regret, sharpened by the pain of hope
Created a living trauma that became our abode
We could not move forward, we could not escape
Yet to the world outside … we had it made.
So I’m holding your hand, I’m holding it tight,
As we make our escape, may we get through the night.
The night that brings clouds of longing for the past
And memories of good times that never did last.
I’m holding you tight and you’re holding me back.
I know through your warmth, we’re on the right track.
Our muddy footprints will soon be washed away,
Yet grains of sand, between our toes stay.
A reminder of who we once were
And what we had seen
A warning, a caution,
Of what should never be.
We left in the rain.
I admit we left in a rush,
But we left at a time when it was either them or us.
I will always stand by our difficult choice.
We left in the rain.
We left together all the same.
