3 Hooks That Actually Work on Meta Ads Right Now

We’ve all done it, mindlessly scrolling until something … anything…makes us pause. At Paid Amp, I’ve turned that moment into my career. I’m deep in the UGC and ads space, and despite my experience, I’m still learning what triggers that precious ‘scroll stop’ every single day.
I watched a video that broke down what hooks are working right now on Meta. No fluff, just tested stuff. The kind of video I wish I found when I started.
Here’s the simple takeaway for folks like us, who just want to make better ads.
The Old Rule is Dead.
We used to think you had to show the problem or the product in the first 3 seconds. Get right to it.
But the video explained that Meta’s new algorithm (they call it “Andromeda”) changed the game. Now, to really scale, your ads need to catch people who are higher up in the funnel — people just browsing, not necessarily searching for your solution yet.
The creator’s team tested over 5,000 ads this year. These are the hooks that are winning.
Here are 3 you should try tomorrow:
- The “Investment” Hook. This one is smart. You talk about the time, money, or effort someone wasted before they found your product. “I spent $500 on 3 different gym memberships before…” or “I tried 5 different apps for a year…” Why it works: It targets people who’ve had those same failed attempts. It also builds trust fast because they see you understand the struggle. The video says to find these by digging into your customer reviews and looking for their “failed attempts.”
- The “Scam” Hook. This one feels risky, but the data says it works. Using the word “SCAM” in your text overlay or hook stops people dead in their tracks. Why it works: Two reasons. First, it triggers loss aversion — people hate feeling cheated. Second, it creates curiosity. If you say “I thought this was a scam…” people have to find out why it wasn’t. It’s an easy twist on a top-performing video.
- The “Give Me [Time]” Hook. This one came from studying YouTube. You simply ask for a small time commitment upfront: “Give me 30 seconds to change how you think about protein shakes.” Why it works: When people mentally agree to give you that time, they stick around longer. This boosts your “hook rate” and “hold rate,” which the algorithm loves.
The Biggest Lesson: A Hook Isn’t Just What You Say.
This was the gold. A true hook has 4 parts happening in the first 3 seconds:
- Text Overlay Hook (the words on screen).
- Sound Hook (the music or first words spoken).
- Visual Hook (what you’re seeing).
- The Vibe (lighting, fonts, feeling).
The video argued that changing the Visual Hook often has a bigger impact than changing the script. Show, don’t tell.
They suggested using quick, gripping stock clips from a site like Storyblocks to add these visual hooks:
- Drip/Squeeze shots (like a drop hanging, then getting squeezed).
- Abstract, surreal art (for emotional products).
- Explosion clips (fruit exploding is weirdly effective).
My Plan as a Budding UGC Editor:
I’m keeping this simple. For my next few ad concepts, I’m going to:
- Pick one of these 3 verbal hooks (Investment, Scam, or Give Me Time).
- Brainstorm a visual hook that shows the idea, not just says it. Maybe use a quick, gripping stock clip.
- Remember the 4-part structure: text, sound, visual, vibe. All in 3 seconds.
No overcomplicating it. Just test, see what sticks, and learn.
If you’re also figuring this out, I’d say watch that video. It had more hooks (like “POV you hate X” and emotional hooks), but these three feel like the simplest place to start.
Let me know if you try any. We’re all just trying to get better.
Simple works.
