The sounds of the unseen

Mihir believed ghosts often visited this end of the floor on days like these, when it was unusually quiet. The other washroom was out of use. While he was inside the toilet, a door slammed shut. The sound echoed sharply. He froze — there were no footsteps. A loud gurgle of a flush, and then the trickling of water followed. The winter wind from the graveyard rustled against the window. Mihir’s throat went dry. He heard a shrill whistle, causing him to run out without looking back.

What he didn’t know was that the washroom above his was being used.
