When Nathaniel Falls joined Avride, he was no stranger to complex machinery. Having previously worked across a wide variety of vehicles as a certified Master Technician he was accustomed to diving into intricate mechanical and electrical systems. But he was increasingly frustrated by the grind, where speed and flat-rate turnover often pushed quality to the backseat.

Desiring a culture built on engineering rigor and quality over pure quantity, Nathaniel made the jump to autonomous technology. What he found wasn’t a rigid, corporate environment — it was a fast-paced, hands-on frontier.

Starting as an on-site technician, Nathaniel quickly stepped up to manage operations at The Ohio State University (OSU) — home to the world’s largest single-location robot delivery deployment, operating a fleet of over 120 robots and completing up to 2,000 deliveries a day. Today, he serves as Operations Technician Lead in Dallas, overseeing both Avride’s autonomous cars and delivery robot local operations.

We sat down with Nathaniel to talk about managing a massive robot deployment on campus every day, the shared technology, infrastructure, and operational approaches between robots and cars, and the culture that keeps the fleet moving.

Pioneering at OSU: Learning a New Platform on the Fly

Stepping into Avride during the launch of the OSU campus deployment was similar to a trial by fire. Nathaniel jumped straight into a dynamic, high-density environment where the team had to establish operations from scratch.

“Stepping into the Location Lead role at OSU was an incredible experience. Scaling operations from 30 or 40 robots to 90, 100, and then 120+ was really about setting up and constantly fine-tuning our processes for a deployment of that scale. Honestly, I genuinely loved every bit of that operational challenge. Through that process, I built a deep trust in our technology, knowing that the second those robots roll out the door, they’re going to accomplish their mission. Successfully launching and operating it gives you a real sense of pride and ownership.”

OSU was the very first campus where Avride deployed the newest generation of its delivery robots. Because the hardware was brand-new and fresh off the assembly line, many operational quirks and nuances only revealed themselves once the robots hit the pavement in daily real-world operations. What stood out to Nathaniel during those early days was how actively Avride’s engineering teams stayed involved with ground operations.

“Whenever an issue popped up on-site, the engineers were right there with us — whether in person or over video calls — taking photos, analyzing logs, and designing fixes. In Austin headquarters, they were smashing these robots up to see where things could break so we could order the exact parts we might need in advance. They cared deeply about every single detail, and having that level of instant support made you feel like you were part of one united team. It wasn’t just a local operation; the entire company responded to the launch.”

When asked for a concrete example of this cross-team collaboration in action, Nathaniel immediately recalled the robot flags — and how the entire team rallied together to solve a real-world operational challenge:

If you have a fleet of 100 robots and they all have flags, and your students find out that they make a neat sound when you smack them… they all break! So you have 100 flags to replace today, and they’re all blockers, because flags are a safety critical component.

We worked closely with the engineering team to iterate on a fix. You redesign the flag to make it more robust, and they still break! So we collaborated on adding a spring to the base to withstand student damage. Even our design team got involved and created cute faces for the robots. That completely shifted how people interacted with them — instead of smacking the flags, students actually fell in love with them!”

One Ecosystem: Shared Technology, Infrastructure, and Operational Approaches

When Nathaniel transitioned to Dallas to launch Avride’s autonomous robotaxi operations in 2025 he stepped onto a new platform.

“In automotives, if you’re in a dealership, they teach you you’re at the cutting edge of technology. If you get into technical support, they tell you you’re at the bleeding edge of technology because you get all the information before it’s released to dealerships. So here, if that was the bleeding edge, I don’t know what this is! It’s the highest you can go with technology; it’s the limits of automotives.”

While a full-sized autonomous car and a sidewalk delivery robot serve different use cases, Nathaniel quickly found that the underlying technology, communication channels, and operational frameworks were built on the exact same foundation.

“When I started working with cars, everything clicked. In a way, our delivery robots are like the younger siblings of our autonomous vehicles, inheriting its capabilities directly from the cars. The way the car thinks and the way the robot thinks come from the exact same platform — you can clearly trace that identical software architecture, core perception, and safety-first approach in how both navigate their environments.”

Moving to the vehicle side, Nathaniel realized he didn’t have to reinvent the wheel. The infrastructure and management processes he used for robots were already structured identically for autonomous cars.

“For fleet management, we have the exact same systems: service campaigns just like we have in robots, inventory accounting, battery charge status, draining logs and more. Flagging out design issues or bracket improvements in robots is actually the same as in cars. The infrastructure, the electrical engineering, the approach to our systems — it interchanged almost exactly.”

Collaborative Culture: “Building What’s Never Been Built”

Navigating the limits of autonomous technology requires close collaboration between software engineers, hardware designers, and field operations. For Nathaniel, the openness of the team is what makes the fast-paced environment work.

“I don’t know of anyone in any position at Avride who will refuse to sit down with you and work through a problem. The exact same people who design our robots also design our cars. These vehicles are almost like their children — we used to name them, and now that we use fleet numbers, they get sad!

Everyone on the team is right there with you. We’re not selling life insurance here — we’re building something that’s never been built before, and that shared focus makes the work genuinely fun.”

Advice for Growing Your Career at Avride

Nathaniel’s progression from technician to leading multi-product operations in Dallas highlights how internal mobility works within the company.

His advice for anyone looking to scale their career at Avride?

“It’s about owning your work. Doing a good job is appreciated, but going beyond that means being meticulous, paying attention to the details, and taking ownership of your mistakes. If you care about what you’re building and you’re willing to push yourself past what you thought you could do, the growth takes care of itself.”
