MP Mthandeni fed up with co-accused Bacede’s bully behaviour

The so-called unity between jailed Members of Parliament Mthandeni Dube and Mduduzi Bacede Mabuza is nothing but a public spectacle.

Behind the scenes the two MPs have, for quite some time, not been singing from the same hymn book.

That is the reason at some point MP Mthandeni asked His Majesty’s Correctional Services to move him from Matsapha maximum prison to Sidvwashini prison.

Mthandeni wanted to be as far away as possible from Bacede because he was tired of being controlled by him.

Bacede has been taking advantage of having money and was using this to exert control over Mthandeni who does not have the kind of money that the owner of a string of hardware outlets styled Baceth Hardware has.

Mthandeni has felt belittled by Bacede from the first day that they were arrested back in July 2021 on terrorism and murder charges.

It began with the choice of lawyer that was to represent either of them as Bacede did not allow Mthandeni to pick his own lawyer but dictated that they were going to e represented by Sifiso Jele who went on to instruct advocate Mduduzi ‘Tsotsi’ Mabila.

When Mthandeni suggested that he wanted his own lawyer, he was told not to bother himself because that had already been taken care of.

He was told that it was necessary to have one lawyer representing the two of them so that they could speak in one voice.

He was also told that he was not supposed to bother himself with legal fees because Bacede would foot the bill.

When the decision to change lawyers was taken, Mthandeni had no say but it was Bacede who decided that Jele and Mabila be dumped and be replaced by Advocate Sicelo Mngomezulu who is based in South Africa.

Again, Mthandeni was told not to worry himself because Bacede was going to foot the bill.

Mthandeni has also not had his wife or relatives bringing him food to prison as Bacede stopped them and said they will both have their food brought by his two wives.

So, even the food that Mthandeni was eating in prison was not of his own choice but was what Bacede craved and instructed his wives to cook or buy from the restaurant.

Mthandeni was given the excuse that this was being done to minimise chances of him eating food that is laced with poison as they would both eat food brought to them by one source.

Mthandeni tolerated this at first but later had a change of heart and decided to eat the food that was served by the prison to the other prisoners as he was tired of eating what Bacede craved every day.

Mthandeni also did not agree with Bacede being afforded preferential treatment by prison officials whom he was bribing to have him get access to the use of mobile phones and sexual favours.

Bacede’s older brother Bheki has been pulling the strings on the outside making sure that the prison officials who were giving Bacede preferential treatment were taken care of through giving them money and settling some of their financial problems such as school fees for their children.

While all these happened, Bacede created a clear difference between him and Mthandeni by showing off within prison so that it became clear to prison officers and other prisoners that he was the one who had money and not Mthandeni.

Bacede has been controlling Mthandeni and the Ngwemphisi MP is now fed up by this and is doing everything possible to claim his independence.

Bacede has told his legal team and other pro-democracy supporters of this challenge and they have decided to deal with the matter by lying to the public that Dube was being ill-treated by prison officers.

There are also lies that Mthandeni is sick and being denied access to treatment by prison officials, but the truth is that Mthandeni is very well and this is just meant to divert attention from the fallout between him and Bacede.

Bacede knows that with Mthandeni no longer under his control, anything can happen and already there is talk that someone wants to turn State witness. Could this someone be Mthandeni? Watch this space!
