Alek Wek is one of the world’s most celebrated supermodels and has long stood as a symbol of self-acceptance and individuality. Confident in her identity from an early age, she never questioned her own beauty. In an interview with The Guardian in 2014, when asked whether she had always considered herself beautiful, she replied simply, “Oh yes, of course.”

Born on April 16, 1977, in South Sudan, Wek fled to the United Kingdom as a teenager during the civil war in Sudan. She was one of nine children raised by a devoted mother and a father who worked as an education official before tragically losing his life while attempting to escape the conflict.

Wek often credits her mother for instilling confidence and pride in her children. Her mother taught them to celebrate the beauty of womanhood and value themselves deeply. Although Wek faced ridicule for looking different from the children around her, surviving war gave her a perspective that made such criticism insignificant.

Rise in Fashion

Alek Wek’s modelling career soon reached extraordinary heights. She worked with some of the world’s leading fashion houses and appeared on the covers of publications such as Elle, Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Glamour, Forbes Africa, and Ebony. In 2002, she made her acting debut in The Four Feathers, playing the Sudanese princess Aquol.

One of the defining moments of her career came in 1998 during a runway show for Betsey Johnson. Wek removed the blonde wig she had been styled in while walking the runway. Later, in an interview with the BBC, she explained that the act symbolized her refusal to become a gimmick in the fashion industry. Over time, the moment became a powerful statement against narrow European beauty standards and a celebration of authenticity and individuality.

Humanitarian Work

Beyond fashion, Wek has dedicated herself to philanthropy and humanitarian work. In 2013, she was appointed a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Reflecting on the support she once received, she shared:

“There is no doubt that I would not be where I am today if it were not for the support of relatives, friends, strangers — and UNHCR. I remember UNHCR field staff on the ground in Sudan, providing basic needs to those of us seeking aid. To this day, the sight of UNHCR’s blue logo still invokes in me a sense of comfort and safe-keeping.”

After the independence of South Sudan, Wek returned to her homeland to support communities and raise awareness about the experiences of refugees. She also launched her handbag line, Wek 1933, named after the birth year of her father.

Throughout her life and career, Alek Wek has used her platform to challenge stereotypes, celebrate African identity, and advocate for displaced people around the world. Her journey continues to inspire millions as a story of resilience, dignity, and self-belief.
