In developing a website or mobile application, a good design is not only about attractive visuals. A product must also be easy to use, easy to understand, and able to help users complete their goals smoothly. This is why usability testing is important.

Usability testing is a method used to evaluate a product by asking real users to try it. Through this process, the team can identify problems, confusion, or difficulties experienced by users while using the product. Based on the practicum module, usability testing includes several stages such as creating a test plan, recruiting participants, preparing tasks and scenarios, conducting the test, and analyzing the results.

Why Usability Testing Matters

Usability testing helps the development team understand whether the product is truly user-friendly. Sometimes, a feature that seems simple to the designer or developer may still be confusing for users.

The benefits of usability testing include:

  1. Finding usability problems early.
  2. Understanding user behavior.
  3. Improving user experience.
  4. Making the product easier to use.
  5. Reducing the risk of product failure after launch.

Stages of Usability Testing

  1. Create a Test Plan

The first step is creating a test plan. This plan explains what product will be tested, the purpose of the test, who the participants are, where and when the test will be conducted, and what tools are needed. A clear test plan helps the testing process run in a structured way.

  1. Define the Test Objectives

After preparing the test plan, the team needs to define the objectives. The objective should explain what the team wants to find out from the test. For example, the team may want to know whether users can register an account, find a service, complete a booking, or make a payment without difficulty.

  1. Recruit Participants

Participants should represent the target users of the product. For example, if the application is designed for vehicle owners, the participants should be people who regularly use motorcycles or cars. Before testing, the team can also do screening by asking questions about age, occupation, experience with similar apps, or user habits.

  1. Prepare Tasks and Scenarios

Tasks are activities that participants must complete during the test. Scenarios provide context so participants understand the situation.

Example:

Task: Book a vehicle service. Scenario: Your motorcycle has a problem, but you do not have time to visit a repair shop. You want to use the app to book a technician. How would you do it?

Good scenarios should be realistic and not too detailed, so users can explore the product naturally.

  1. Conduct the Test

During the test, participants complete the tasks while the team observes their behavior. The team can record whether the user completes the task successfully, how long it takes, and which parts cause confusion. The session can also be recorded to help the team review the test results later.

  1. Analyze the Results

After testing, the team analyzes the collected data. The analysis may include task success rate, user comments, time spent, and usability problems found during the session. The results help the team understand which parts of the product need improvement.

  1. Make Improvement Recommendations

The final stage is creating recommendations based on the findings. For example, the team may suggest making buttons clearer, simplifying the booking flow, improving text instructions, or adding more visible price information. These recommendations can be used to improve the product before it is launched or tested again.

Conclusion

Usability testing is an important process in product development. It helps teams understand how real users interact with a website or application. By following stages such as planning, recruiting participants, preparing tasks, conducting tests, analyzing results, and making improvements, a product can become easier, clearer, and more comfortable to use.
