Well, having missed the big day I thought that I would flip the script and instead of singing their praises, talk about a few of the Beatles songs that I thought sucked.
Whilst I still think that they are the greatest and most influential band ever, they were, like most of us, not perfect. And here’s my take on why.
1. Yellow Submarine:
An epic fail and an absolute rubbish song. Sorry, Ringo, but let’s be honest. The EP, released in 1969 containing the soundtrack of the animated movie of the same name, bombed. Even as a kid myself, all of 14 years old, I always felt that the song was childish and the lyrics were just dopey.
Thankfully, Ringo did better with later songs, but this one is just a DUD.
2. Let It Be:
Written by Paul and released as a Lennon/McCartney song in 1970. The song is almost four minutes long, but somehow it just seems eternally longer. It simply goes on and on and on. It was, however, hugely popular, and still gets played these days. Nostalgia, I guess. But it felt, to me, like a vanity project for Paul.
Apparently, even Lennon didn’t like it.
3. Revolution 9 and Honey Pie:
Two for the price of one. Bargain. Forgive me for resorting to a little research here, but the Beatles catalogue is extensive, unlike my memory. According to Reddit, these two songs from The White Album fall into the category of “least popular” of their stuff. I don’t even remember the former and only vaguely remember the latter, giving some credence to the rating.
Honey Pie was quite cute, if I remember correctly. Too cute, perhaps.
4. Mull Of Kintyre:
I know that I am cheating on this one, but I had to sneak it in. This dirge (an apt word for it, I feel) was written by Paul for his band Wings in 1977, after the Beatles had broken up. While it is viewed as a masterpiece by many, my take is that it is mind-numbingly long, boring as hell, and another vanity project of Paul's.
At almost five minutes long, it’s another song that just drags on and on.
Maybe magic mushrooms were involved?
5. You’re Gonna Lose That Girl:
I’m ending off with another flip of the script, just to keep you on your toes, to reveal my absolute favourite Beatles song. Released on their 1965 album Help, the song showcases the band’s absolute command of harmony. If you haven’t heard it, do yourself a favour and find it. Plenty of places to look. Sometimes the tune gets in my head, and I can’t shake it. Probably because I don’t actually want to.
And their movie Help was also quite good fun.
Thanks for reading, and, in the immortal words of “Billy the window cleaner” from the movie Gregory’s Girl:
If I don’t see you through the week, I’ll see you through a window
