Did You Know Spectacles Are Recycled?

I discovered this yesterday

I found 4 pairs of computer glasses My photo

I took three pairs of glasses to Specsavers for adjustment and/or repair. My sunnies needed to be tightened so they didn’t fall off when I bend over. My driving-at-night glasses needed straightening. I had accidentally trodden on them as I was stepping out of the car. And the third pair – my new glasses for computer work – were beyond repair.

Baby T. had done his darnedest to pull them apart. I’ve been wearing my 2019 glasses, which do the job, but I knew they weren’t good for my eyes as I’d wind up with a headache. And I don’t get headaches.

I handed the third pair over, saying, “These are my new pair. I bought them in January this year.”

“No. You bought them in January, 2022.”

“Are you sure? They couldn’t be an older style I bought this year?”

“No, they have information on them from 2022.

“You can throw that old pair in the bin!”

That’s when I found out they disassemble each part and reuse it. No wonder they can give you a second pair free.

I had trouble accepting I’d had them for more than 4 years. My next question was, “Where are my new ones?”

I came home and looked. I found three pairs, not counting the 2019 pair. I’m taking them in to have them identified to see if any of them are my new prescription. I’ll donate the others to be recycled. All of these glasses are just confusing me.

I keep all of my sunglasses too, but I can tell from the frames how old they are, and I’ve lost a few pairs over the years. I still had eight pairs in the drawer. I don’t throw anything out.

I always take a spare pair of both sunnies and computer glasses when I travel. I lost both before I had even left England in 2023.

How many glasses are too many? Maybe it’s time to cull.
