Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY): Leading the Democratic Party
Through Political Turmoil
Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY), the eldest son of Indonesia’s sixth president, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY), has played a central role in shaping the future of the Democratic Party since being elected as chairman on March 15, 2020.
His leadership came at a crucial time, marked by **internal challenges, political battles, and efforts to modernize the party** in Indonesia’s dynamic political landscape.

From Military Officer to Political Leader
Born on August 10, 1978, in Bandung, West Java, AHY initially pursued a military career, graduating from the Indonesian Military Academy (Akmil) in 2000 with the prestigious Adhi Makayasa award. His service included missions like peacekeeping operations in Lebanon (2006). However, in 2016, AHY left the military to enter politics, inspired by his father’s legacy.
His first major political challenge came in the 2017 Jakarta gubernatorial election, where he lost to Anies Baswedan-Sandiaga Uno. Despite the defeat, the race propelled him into national politics. Three years later, he was elected as the youngest chairman in the history of the Democratic Party, symbolizing a new generation of leadership.
The Moeldoko Coup Attempt: A Defining Moment
AHY’s leadership was put to the test when a faction attempted to overthrow him. On March 5, 2021, a rival group held an illegal Extraordinary Congress (KLB) in Deli Serdang, North Sumatra, declaring Moeldoko (President Joko Widodo’s Chief of Staff) as the new chairman.
AHY swiftly countered the coup, branding it a political hijacking backed by external forces aiming to weaken the opposition. With his legal team and strong internal backing, AHY fought to maintain legitimacy. The Ministry of Law and Human Rights (Kemenkumham) ultimately rejected Moeldoko’s claim on March 31, 2021, solidifying AHY’s control.
The victory was crucial, showcasing AHY’s resilience and leadership, but it also left the party in need of rebuilding its image.

Strategizing for the 2024 Elections
After defeating the coup, AHY focused on consolidating the party. He embarked on nationwide roadshows, strengthened grassroots connections, and revamped the party’s digital strategy to engage millennials and Gen Z.
Heading into the 2024 elections, the Democratic Party initially joined the Coalition for Change with NasDem and PKS, backing Anies Baswedan. However, disputes over the vice-presidential pick led AHY to withdraw and realign with Prabowo Subianto’s coalition.
This tactical move paid off — Prabowo-Gibran won the presidency, and the Democrats maintained a strong parliamentary presence. Though not as dominant as during SBY’s era, the party remained a relevant force in Indonesian politics.
Looking Ahead: AHY’s Future in 2025 and Beyond
As his first term as party chairman nears completion in 2025, widespread support has emerged for AHY to continue leading. By February 2025, 27 regional Democratic Party leaders had openly endorsed his re-election, recognizing his ability to navigate crises and sustain party unity.
In an interview on February 10, 2025, AHY expressed his commitment to expanding the party’s influence, targeting greater electoral success in 2029, and focusing on economic and environmental issues.
However, challenges remain:
- He must prove he is more than just SBY’s son — a leader with his own vision.
- Competition with major parties like PDIP, Golkar, and Gerindra will require a stronger national strategy.
- Internal unity must be preserved to avoid a repeat of the Moeldoko incident.
AHY’s journey from military officer to political leader highlights the evolution of Indonesia’s younger generation in politics. Despite setbacks, he has emerged as a resilient and strategic leader, capable of steering the Democratic Party through turbulent times.
As 2025 approaches, his next move will define not only his career but also the future of his party. Will he expand his influence on the national stage? Or will political rivalries challenge his leadership once again? Only time will tell.
What do you think? Is AHY ready to become a key political figure beyond the Democratic Party? Let us know in the comments!
