God Is Not Dead — Find Your Own God

Nietzsche’s Declaration, and the Answer Found in History

“God is dead.”

When I first encountered this sentence, I spent a long time turning the pages of Thus Spoke Zarathustra, searching for its meaning. But ironically, the answer was found not in a philosophy book — it was found in history.

“Could it be possible! This old saint in the forest hath not yet heard of it, that God is dead!” (Prologue, Chapter 2)

The Birth of God

Around 4000 BC, the first seeds of human civilization took root along the fertile riverbanks of Mesopotamia. The Sumerians abandoned their nomadic lives and began to settle the land. As they farmed, built cities, and waged wars, they faced an entirely new kind of problem: how do you unite thousands of people who share no common language, no common blood, no common memory?

The answer was God.

They created gods. They built temples and appointed priests. Through the elaborate system of religion, they planted a shared cosmology among strangers. God was shaped by human hands from the very beginning. And ever since history began, people across every land have fashioned their own gods beneath their own skies. This was the starting point of all civilization.

What God Gave to Humanity

Once humanity had God, everything changed.

People began to imagine what could not be seen. They painted the world beyond death. They dreamed of what lay above the sky. Those who imagined heaven rendered it in paint, carved it in stone, and sang it into being. The longing to reach God raised the pyramids and drove the spires of Gothic cathedrals toward the heavens. The hunger for the invisible expanded the human mind.

And remarkably, even the rejection of God pushed humanity forward. Science was born from doubt in myth. As human reason displaced what God once governed, we learned to calculate the distance of stars and peer inside the atom. Whether through faith or revolt, God was the force that kept humanity in motion.

The life of someone who has traveled to the edge of the sky is inevitably different from the life of someone who never tried.

What Nietzsche Really Wanted to Say

So why did Nietzsche declare that God is dead?

It was not a proclamation of absence. It was precisely the opposite. Nietzsche was demanding that we face the truth — that it was humanity who created God. That God does not exist somewhere outside of us, but has always lived within us. That the one who asks the question and the one who answers it are not different. That the one who longs and the one who fulfills that longing are not different.

By killing God, Nietzsche was trying to awaken the divinity inside the human being.

“Man is a rope stretched between the animal and the Overman — a rope over an abyss. What is great in man is that he is a bridge and not a goal.” (Prologue, Chapter 4)

Eight Billion Gods

At this very moment, eight billion human beings inhabit this earth. And there are eight billion separate desires.

The old long for youth. The young long for stability. The poor long for wealth. The wealthy long for eternal life. The lonely long for their other half. The coupled long for freedom. Some desire diamonds. Some desire a single loaf of bread.

Each of them prays to their own god — a god that is invisible yet present, all-powerful, and loves only them.

The fact that all these gods look different is not evidence that God is a lie. It is evidence of how deeply God is rooted in the human interior.

Where Is Your God Right Now?

A being that can do anything, exists everywhere, and loves you without condition.

That is the God you need.

Draw as close to your God as you possibly can, in the most devoted way you know how. Become the closest friend of the most powerful force in the world.

To transcend space and time — and come to know your own heaven, your own hell. To stretch your mind to its furthest reach, and carry yourself from the limits of being human all the way to the edge of the divine.

That is what we are here to do.

God is not dead. God is inside you.
