A Change Of Pace

«One of the biggest lies that the Kremlin regime has been spreading in the West for years received a devastating blow today».

With these words, the 12th Azov Special Brigade made it known that it had passed all the long and scrupulous inspections required by US law in the security field to benefit from the Western equipment and training provided by Washington to Ukraine.

Overcoming the latest bans allows the brigade’s personnel to increase their combat capabilities and, once and for all, overcome any residual distrust due to the misunderstandings that generated the false information spread by the Kremlin all these years.

Contributing to the debunking of many of those clichés, I wrote about them on the Italian newspaper “La Ragione” on November 24th, the occasion of the launch of the azovcontrafake.com website.

The ban was imposed ten years ago on the then volunteer militia created in defense of Mariupol’ (occupied by the Russians in 2014 and then liberated also thanks to it) about the “Leahy law”, which was written by the former senator of the same name Patrick Joseph Lehay to prevent American military assistance to those foreign units that might use them to commit serious human rights violations.

In an official note, the US State Department has announced in recent hours that it has not found any evidence of such violations, once and for all clearing the recognition and official support for troops who are now part of the National Guard in all respects in Ukraine.

In a lengthy speech aired on CBS News, Senator Lindsay Graham also explained to Americans another key concept linked to the real reasons that pushed Putin to invade Ukraine:

«It is potentially the richest country in Europe. Ukrainians have $10–12 trillion worth of critically important minerals. Putin wants those resources to be sold to China. In the event of Kyiv’s victory, however, those precious resources could be shared with the West. So, if we help Ukraine now, it can become the best trading partner we ever dreamed of having».

A cardinal concept that I have taken up several times, also thanks to the contribution of the Italian researcher who first and most of all knew how to get it right: Giuseppe Sabella, author of «La guerra delle materie prime e lo scudo ucraino» (Rubbettino, 2022). The fact that it was a Republican to remarked that

«we cannot afford to lose the war but rather we must help the Ukrainians to win it»

puts even more emphasis on the reasons for the change of pace that Speaker Johnson invited the American Congress to make. As Senator Graham explains,

«The Ukrainians are sitting on a gold mine. It is a unique opportunity. Thinking of handing over those assets to Putin and China is simply ridiculous».

Thanks also to American missiles, in the past few hours, the Ukrainian army has destroyed two other S-300 and S-400 radar systems, forcing the Russians to relocate others from occupied Crimea to the Belgorod region.

In addition to the second Samp-T promised by Italy and the third Patriot arriving from Berlin, the USA has also decided to provide a further “Phased Array Tracking Radar Intercept On Target” type defensive system, allowing the one located in Ukraine to be moved to Poland to protect American troops.

Security Council spokesman John Kirby assures that

«this will allow us to strengthen Ukrainian defenses without compromising the military readiness of the United States».

This American change of pace has allowed Kyiv to gain new momentum in its defensive maneuvers and start thinking about counter-offensive ones: in May, Ukraine mobilized more men than in the entire previous semester and is determined more than ever to take back every inch of lost land.

As Zelenskyj reiterates,

«The only just peace passes through the restoration of our territorial integrity».
