What a Hidden Forest Network Taught Me About Thriving Communities

When I first learned about mycelium, I was fascinated by the science. The idea that vast underground networks could move nutrients, water, and information through an ecosystem felt almost magical. Yet the more I read, the less interested I became in the fungi themselves and the more interested I became in what they revealed about connection.

I began to notice similar patterns in the communities around me. At the library, volunteers quietly sort books, organize donations, and support programs that reach thousands of people. Most visitors never meet them, yet their contributions help make the entire system work. In professional organizations, I have watched relationships formed years earlier create opportunities, introductions, and support when they were needed most. In neighborhoods, nonprofits, schools, and workplaces, I kept seeing the same thing: whenever something healthy and thriving emerged, there was usually a network beneath it.

That realization changed how I think about community. We often focus on the visible result, a successful organization, a growing business, a respected leader, a flourishing program, but those outcomes rarely appear on their own. Behind them are people sharing knowledge, offering encouragement, connecting resources, and helping one another succeed. The visible achievement may capture our attention, but the relationships are what sustain it.

Perhaps that is why the image of mycelium has stayed with me for so many years. It reminds me that thriving is not created by a single individual. A forest does not flourish because one tree grows taller than the others. It flourishes because countless living relationships beneath the soil help support the whole ecosystem.

Human communities are not so different. Every time we share what we know, help someone take their next step, make an introduction, volunteer our time, or support a neighbor, we strengthen the network. We contribute something that extends beyond ourselves. Like mycelium enriching the soil, those small acts create conditions where others can grow.

The more I reflect on this, the more I believe that thriving communities are built in much the same way thriving forests are built; not through competition alone, but through connection. Not through a single hero or organization, but through thousands of people contributing what they can for the benefit of the whole.

When I walk through a forest today, I still admire the trees. But I also find myself thinking about everything happening beneath them. Hidden from view, an intricate network is constantly moving resources where they are needed, strengthening the health of the ecosystem one connection at a time.

Perhaps nature has been showing us the answer all along. The solution is not waiting for someone else to build the community we want to live in. The solution is recognizing that we are already part of the network. Through our relationships, our generosity, our knowledge, and our willingness to support one another, we become contributors to something much larger than ourselves.

In that sense, perhaps we are the mycelium.
