Gender Narratives in the Media: A Reflection
Long before formal study, I sensed the subtle sidelining of women in everyday encounters and routine media where women were seen but rarely heard. My undergraduate research on sexualisation in Nigerian music videos confirmed a troubling pattern: women objectified, reduced to silent, sexualised accessories. This realisation fueled my critical reflection on how popular culture unknowingly reinforces gender inequality.

While some artists now challenge these portrayals, many still, perhaps unknowingly, repeat such stereotypes. This contradiction shows the limits of surface-level progress. True equality needs more than representation; it requires awareness, accountability, and courage to rewrite the narratives we’ve accepted as normal.
