What is Childhood?

When you think about your own early days, you don’t remember the long hours of sitting at a desk studying. Instead, you remember the happy days of playing with your friends until you are huffing and puffing on the ground.

The wonder of experiencing the world in a protected environment and the freedom of just being a child.

A childhood is a mix of two very important things: learning and living.

Learning is about preparing for the world and its possible future by acquiring knowledge, skills, behaviour, and attitudes in the formal and informal education institutions, which will help build a secure foundation for a child’s dreams.

Living, on the other hand, is about living at present. It is the unstructured and unpredictable, joyful way of making memories that will stay with oneself till the end. This is also where they get to learn about teamwork, problem-solving, and navigating disagreements. Living is what nurtures their emotional well-being.

You cannot have one without the other. If a child focuses only on learning, they won’t be able to “live” and will exhaust their spirit on the way. But if they focus too much on living, they won’t have the foundation to support their dreams later on.

These moments of living in between study times, as a break, give children a much-needed mental break and help refresh their minds, making them happy and eager to learn more.

That’s why this week, on 15th June, Pehchaan The Street School had some wonderful collaborations that our students and volunteers got to experience.

The team of Cold Brew and Pyas Cafe, along with the 4 representatives of Mukherjee Nagar Centre, conducted a live demonstration of making cold coffee and mocktails. More than 90 students got to attend the session with the active participation of the whole class. After the lively session, they were offered refreshments, concluding a successful, engaging and enjoyable learning experience for the students.

Meanwhile, a group of 12 students and 3 volunteers took on an adventurous outing in Lazer Crazer Gaming & Cafe, where they got to play laser tag, PS5 gaming, and VR experiences like cricket and rollercoaster rides. Afterwards, they were provided with drinks and pizzas as refreshments. And the highlight of their day was the laser tag competition, where the top players were awarded medals. A fun day which prioritised the meaning of teamwork, raking up exciting engagement from the students and the volunteers as well.

Last but not least, the group of 15 students and 4 volunteers visited The Hidden Hour — Mystery Escape Rooms as part of an outing where they participated in a one-hour escape room challenge. Afterwards, they got their well-deserved refreshments like drinks, pizzas and nuts to energise their exhausted brains. The Hidden Hour also generously gifted 100 registers, 100 pen-pencils and participation awards like medals to the students and the volunteers. This activity also promoted teamwork, problem-solving and heartfelt engagement of the students and the volunteers.

These outings and activities might seem distracting, but they are helping in our students’ overall growth as well. And they also hold as much value as the formal classes they attend in both the school and the Pehchaan The Street School.

To continue these activities, we, Pehchaan The Street School, can’t do this alone. It is a monumental task, even on a short scale; this requires people who would spend some of their time on volunteer work, and people who would help us financially to cater to the needs of our students.

It is not a task to be taken lightly, and requires our utmost attention, for this is for the bright future of the world. So, do reach out to us to help us move with our movement of Education To All.
