Appropriate Technology Transforms Waste Glass Bottles into Economic Opportunities for Communities

Waste management remains a major challenge in Indonesia. One type of waste that often receives little attention is used glass bottles. Many people assume that glass bottles no longer have any value after use, so they are either sold to scrap collectors at very low prices or simply discarded. In reality, this type of waste still has significant potential to be transformed into products with economic value while simultaneously supporting environmental sustainability.

In response to this issue, the Community Service Team implemented an Appropriate Technology (TTG) program by introducing a glass bottle cutting machine in Raci Kulon Village, Sidayu District, Gresik Regency. The program consisted of several stages, including designing and manufacturing the cutting tool, conducting functional testing, providing educational sessions, demonstrating the equipment, facilitating hands-on practice, and evaluating the training outcomes. Through these activities, community members learned how to transform waste glass bottles into creative products such as drinking glasses, flower vases, candle holders, plant pots, and decorative ornaments with higher market value.

The primary objective of this program was to improve the community’s knowledge and practical skills in utilizing waste glass bottles through simple, safe, user-friendly, and independently reproducible technology. In addition to reducing inorganic waste, the initiative aimed to create new business opportunities based on the principles of the creative economy and circular economy, enabling the community to benefit both environmentally and economically.

The expected impact of this program extends beyond the successful creation of a glass bottle cutting machine. More importantly, it seeks to raise public awareness that waste should not be viewed as the end of a product’s life cycle, but rather as a valuable resource that can be reused. With the skills they have acquired, community members are expected to establish creative businesses based on recycled glass, develop community business groups, and improve household income through value-added products.

The enthusiasm shown by the participants was evident throughout the program. Community members actively attended the educational sessions, participated in discussions, and practiced operating the cutting machine themselves. After completing the training, participants realized that used glass bottles, previously considered worthless, could be transformed into marketable creative products. According to the participants, the glass bottle cutting machine is easy to operate, safe to use, and provides an opportunity to produce products with significantly higher economic value than simply selling waste bottles to recycling collectors.

From the perspective of the Community Service Team, the success of this program is measured not only by the functionality of the cutting machine but also by the positive changes in the community’s knowledge, practical skills, and mindset. The team believes that appropriate technology will generate greater long-term impact when accompanied by continuous mentoring, improved production capabilities, product design innovation, and effective marketing strategies, allowing the community to independently sustain and expand their businesses.

In my opinion, this community service program demonstrates that universities can provide practical yet impactful solutions to real problems faced by society. Technology does not always have to be sophisticated or expensive to solve community challenges. Instead, technology designed according to local needs is more likely to be adopted, understood, and developed sustainably. Through the implementation of Appropriate Technology, community members not only acquire new technical skills but also gain opportunities to increase their income while contributing to environmental conservation.

Looking ahead, I hope similar programs can be implemented on a broader scale by involving more community members, village governments, micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), as well as other relevant stakeholders. Continued assistance in product development, packaging, branding, and digital marketing is also essential to ensure that recycled glass products become more competitive in the marketplace. In this way, community service programs will not only produce technological innovations but also foster independent, creative, and environmentally conscious communities.

Ultimately, protecting the environment is not solely the responsibility of the government but a shared responsibility of all members of society. Through simple innovations such as a glass bottle cutting machine, we learn that waste previously considered useless can be transformed into promising economic opportunities. This represents the true essence of community service: providing practical solutions, empowering communities, and creating meaningful change toward a more sustainable future.
