Why Dogs Need Real Protein
The nutritional science behind complete pet food.
Walk down any pet food aisle and you’ll see words like ‘protein-rich’, ‘high-protein’, and ‘meat-first’ plastered across hundreds of bags and pouches. But what does real protein actually mean for your dog — and why does the source matter as much as the quantity?
Dogs have evolved alongside humans for thousands of years, but their nutritional blueprint remains deeply carnivorous. Unlike humans, who can thrive on a wide variety of macronutrient combinations, dogs have specific biological requirements for animal-derived protein that plant sources simply cannot fully replicate.
Protein is more than just a number.
When we talk about protein in pet food, we’re really talking about amino acids — the building blocks that protein breaks down into during digestion. Dogs require 22 amino acids to function properly. Of these, 10 are considered essential, meaning the body cannot synthesise them and they must come directly from food.
Animal proteins — chicken, beef, fish — contain all 10 essential amino acids in ratios that closely match what a dog’s body needs. Plant proteins, on the other hand, are often incomplete, meaning they lack one or more essential amino acids, or they’re present in forms that are harder for dogs to absorb.
Taurine, for instance, is an amino acid critical to canine heart function. While cats are entirely dependent on dietary taurine (they cannot synthesise it at all), dogs have a limited ability to produce it — but not always enough. Real meat is one of the richest sources of dietary taurine available. Similarly, L-carnitine, which helps the body convert fat into energy, is found almost exclusively in animal tissue.
Bioavailability: why source quality matters
Even when a pet food label claims 30% protein, that figure tells you very little without knowing how digestible that protein is. Bioavailability — how much of that protein your dog can actually absorb and use — varies dramatically depending on the source.
High-quality animal protein from cultivated or fresh meat typically has a bioavailability of over 90%. Protein from low-grade rendered meat meals, plant isolates, or heavily processed by-products can be significantly lower. This means a food with 30% highly bioavailable protein can actually be more nutritious than one with 40% protein from poor-quality sources.
What ETHIA’s cultivated protein offers

ETHIA WETFOOD
ETHIA’s wet dog food is built on cultivated chicken — real animal protein grown at the cellular level, with the same amino acid profile and bioavailability as conventionally sourced meat. Because our protein is produced in sterile, controlled conditions, it’s free from the hormones, antibiotics, and bacterial contamination commonly associated with factory-farmed meat.
Every pouch is formulated with real protein your dog’s body knows exactly what to do with — supporting lean muscle mass, immune function, coat health, and sustained energy. That’s not a marketing claim. It’s nutrition science, applied with care.
When you choose ETHIA, you’re not compromising on your dog’s nutritional needs to make an ethical choice. You’re doing both — and that makes all the difference.
