Giving Doesn’t Hurt — Expecting Does
Learning to give freely without waiting for life to respond through others
The happiest person is the one who doesn’t wait to receive anything from anyone.

Not because they have stopped caring. Not because they have become detached or indifferent. But because they’ve slowly realized that waiting for people to become who we wish they were… rarely works.
I’ve noticed something about myself.
I feel a lot lighter — happier even — when I do things with a mindset of giving, instead of silently expecting something in return.
It doesn’t have to be anything big.
Sometimes it’s helping someone. Sometimes it’s just listening. Sometimes it’s just being a little more patient than I feel like being.
And honestly, a lot of the time, the reason is very simple.
It just feels good.
Not in a dramatic or “I did something great” way. More like… you feel useful. You feel like you still have something to offer, even on days when everything else feels off.
But I’ve also learned this the hard way — this only works when you don’t drain yourself doing it.
There are phases in life when you’re already exhausted — mentally, emotionally, in every possible way. And in those moments, the idea of giving anything to anyone can feel… unrealistic.
I’ve been there too.
On those days, “giving” doesn’t have to look big.
Sometimes it’s just: A small smile. A genuine compliment. A quick message checking on someone. Or just a few minutes of being fully present.
We tend to underestimate these things. But they matter more than we think.
And interestingly, when you start small like this, something shifts. You slowly feel more capable again. More open. A little less stuck inside your own head.
There’s also a question that always comes up with this idea:
How long can you keep giving without expecting anything back?
I don’t have a perfect answer.
But for me, it’s always been this — only give as long as it still feels okay within you.
Because keeping your own cup full is your responsibility too.
There’s a quote I really relate to:
“Givers should have boundaries because takers don’t have any.”
Another thought I’ve struggled with is this:
If I’m not getting anything back, why should I even do anything?
Over time, I’ve found a few answers that make sense to me.
One, things don’t always come back from where you expect them to.
You help someone, and somewhere else in life, something unexpectedly works out for you. Life doesn’t really keep accounts the way we imagine it does.
You water the plants and clouds bring it back for you!
Two, giving — even in small ways — grounds you.
It reminds you that you’re not just your problems, your overthinking, or your bad days. You’re still someone who can make a difference, even if it’s tiny.
And maybe the biggest shift happens here —
when you stop focusing so much on what you’re getting.
You stop waiting so much.
Waiting for someone to call. Waiting for someone to understand you. Waiting to feel seen, valued, chosen.
And without even realizing it, a lot of your emotional weight starts lifting.
Because your mood isn’t tied as tightly to what others do or don’t do.
I’m not saying this is easy.
I’m still figuring it out myself.
But the more I observe, the more I feel this — Being able to give without constantly calculating what comes back… is less about being “good” and more about feeling free.
Not because the world will always reward you.
But because you slowly stop living your life waiting for rewards in the first place.
